i am currently living in south africa, and quite possibly will be moving to the U.S soon (most likely to Florida)
i am currently waiting for approval of a fire arm license here.
if i do get it before i move over, how would i go about getting it transferred and registered to me in the U.S?
i'll take care of moving it out of this country, so im only interested in hearing what to do once i get there, or what i need to do before i get there in preparation...
any help will be apreciated

Your best option may be to contact the Attorney General for the state of Florida. Try this website: http://myfloridalegal.com/

I wish you the best of luck. I hope you become a proud U.S. citizen, patriot, and lifetime gun owner. Our country has always and will always need people of that nature.

And please let us know how things work out!

Dre_sa - i am currently waiting for approval of a fire arm license here.

Dre_sa, I am not familiar with South African laws, so I will ask, when you say a firearms license, are you referring to one that will allow you to own a firearm, or one that will allow you to buy and sell guns, such as a firearm dealer? or are you referring to one that would allow a civilian to carry a firearm?

In the States all three above would require a different procedure.

Boon, he is talking about a license to possess now that the RSA is becoming Azania.

Dre, check out the ATFE website. You will likely need a Form 6 and the assistance of a FFL. Do you have someone already in the States? May be another way.

Good luck with your move! Get out while you can.

im already a U.S citizen, my family moved out here shortly after i was born.
i do have family over there, my brother is studyng in florida at the moment, also have an uncle in california.
the license i am talking of is to own (posses a firearm)
and i do intend to become a lieftime fire arm owner, and possibly have a good collection (funding permitting)

thanks for the responses, i'll be looking up those websites...

Packing.org lists gun laws of different states. As a citizen you shouldn't need a license to own a gun in Florida. It isn't New Jersey.
After you establish residency in Florida, you should also be able to get your concealed carry license.

I don't think that you can "Transfer" your SA License. But as a resident of the State of Florida, you can easily get a Concealed Weapons License (CWL)here, provided you are a good guy. Residence can be established by Registering to vote or getting a Fla. Drivers License or if I am not mistaken, showing that you have paid rent, or Utility Bills here. State law requires you to get a Fla. Drivers license shortly after you get here, unless you are transient, so that would work.

i'll be moving there, primarily to further my studies. chances are it will be on a permanant basis. thanks for the replies, im gonna be finding out how to transfer the pistol out of this country. (easier said than done, the fire arm laws change often down here, and the police arent a helpful bunch either).
far as i can tell, opportunities for education and employment are far greater in the U.S than here. i'd hate to say it but its true, im too male and too pale to get a job here.

I guess you'll be glad to know that sjamboks can be cheaply aquired here in the US.

yeah thats great news! ive got one here, which i have modified slightly :)

a sjambok is a long thin piece of rubbery plastic, quiet stiff, but can get a good whipping effect. i believe it was used by police (and just about everyone else) during the apartheid era

Dre, just curious

What are you transferring? If it doesn't have any particular sentimental value, and I understand perfectly if it does, then you should check the price of firearms here. Try googling shotgunnews. I think you'll be surprised of the relative cheapness of guns here, in comparison to there.

im looking at transferring a luger made in 1910, and my remington ramd 1911 from 1943. two things i would preffer to keep

Welcome to the USA!

My luger was made in 1943 and I treasure it as well. As a matter of fact, it even rode nightstand watch while my glock went in for service. I do need to get a new holster for it though, the original is in sad shape. Carry on!

Your firearms must be IMPORTED into the US by a licensed importer by filling an ATF Form 6(although any FFL can do it most are not familar with the procedure)... you cannot import the firearms on your own... check Shotgun News... they have occasional ads from importers... if they are not of sentimental value it may be easier to sell them in SA and purchase others in the US.

If there is anyway you can keep those guns

and get them here... I would support that. As a U.S. citizen you should have the right to bring them 'declaired' into this country. I would contact the ATF and figure out what you need to do.
