South African .308 Milsurp -- Corrosive?

Picked up a single battle pack of .308 South African milsurp this weekend. Though the sign said "non-corrosive," I thought I'd read here that the South African rounds actually are corrosive. It's really a moot point since I clean my rifle thoroughly after I shoot, but I'd just like to know anyway.

I'm working my way around the globe with this milsurp stuff. Have shot Radway Green and Hirtenberger with Hirtenberger giving the best groups so far. Is there any milsurp for the .308 I should try? Or any I should be wary of?

I also just picked some up at a show under the pretence it is non-corosive. The price was great at any rate.

I hope to move this back to the top as I too would like to hear if this is bad stuff.

I don't know about the SA .308 nor have i fired any. I have a buddy that found some British 165 grain that is supposed to be great. I do have some SA 7.62x39 but I wouldn't know as I too clean everything as soon as I get home. I also picked up a couple boxes of Argentine stuff that was okay, sorta on the light side with 147 grain FMJ.

I have both .223 and .303British in South African surplus and both are non-corrosive. Fairly accurate and very reliable.

The Argentine .308 is supposed to be pretty accurate for military ammo, and 147 gr. Mike Lau's book showed a group shot with it, on page 127. The box markings are:
20 Cartuchos
Cal 7.62x51 COMUN
LOT # FLB
Industria Argentina
Now mind the fact that it was shot from a custom rifle, but it grouped well within 1 MOA.

the south african .308 is non-corrosive, we went through about 3k rounds after we got our entreprise fal's. two guys cleaned, one didn't until he went through another 500 rounds on another weekend. he said it cleaned up great.

have you tried the stuff from portugal(sp?) or greece? i still have some stuff from taiwan and korea somewhere in the house.

I used Argetine 7.62 ammo. I got groupings of 1-1.50"@100yards with a out-of-box Savage 10FP with a Bushnell Banner scope. NONE of the Argetine rounds fail to feed or fire. I just bought 15-boxes of Radway 7.62 ammo, I have to shoot that soon. I have not tried the Hirtenberger ammo as of yet, but I will soon. I am still trying to find the best or better MilSurplus ammo out there, so I can buy a case. Let me know how the SA ammo performs, my Gun Shop has some, they have them for $39/battlepack. Is that how much they go for. Another question, Was the SA 7.62 ammo made by the same company that does the PMP handgun ammo? Later.

Ed: It was my impression that all the South African military surplus on the market was made by PMP. There was a good article on them in Shotgun News a couple of months back. In any case, I have never heard anything negative about any of the SA calibers (except that the .223 tended to be a bit dirty).

I just got 300 rds of Malasian .308 from Summit Ammo. It is in great shape, is non-corrosive and got it for .17 cents a round(51.00 for 300). It shoots as good as Remington or any other main stream .308.......

IRT the SA ammo. I have both 7.62x39 and .308 and have had no problems with it and would buy again. AS most of you have said, I clean as soon as I get home so not really an issue...
