Soon to be AK owner

On National "buy a gun day" I put a Maadi on Layaway. I'm new to the AK world. what are the differences between the Misr-10 and other AK type rifles like the mac-90?

My dealer threw in a 30 round mag with my purchase, but on another forum I saw something about making a conversion to accept 30 rounders in the Maadi. Is there something I need to know? Do I need to get a swap for something that will accept 30 round mags without modification?

Mine has the plastic pistol grip stock (no thumb hole) and a wood rear and front pieces.

When I was shopping, I looked at a Romanian version that had a thumbhole stock and 10 round magazine. It was visably obvious that it took a special magazine. the mag well was noticably narrower than the mac-90 and other AK versions. My Maadi looks like it has the same mag well as the Mac-90. It looked like it would accept the standard AK mags and the dealer gave me one with the rifle. The Romanian Rifle was neat, compact and had a very inticing price, $199.00 but I thought I'd rather have something more standardized.
Any comments appreciated.

Scott - Your Maadi is not to be confused with the high-grade pre-ban Steyr-Maadis which are argueably one of the best stamped receiver AKs ever. The post-ban models are made from a pot of parts and vary from fine shooters to jar jacks:( Good indicators of a quality assembled post-ban Maadi are (believe it or not) a straight front sight post, smooth receiver rails devoid of burrs or pits, and a gas piston that rides smoothly in the tube. You would think these characteristics would be standard features!

Your Maadi will accept all 30-round AK mags. If your's was assembled correctly, you will have a fine AK.

Thaks Noban for the info. I'll be finished getting the Maadi out of layaway in about 6 more weeks. I can hardly wait to shoot it.

Scott,

The MISR-10 is a totally import rifle in a pistol grip configuration that was limited to a 10 round, single stack magazine.
If the dealer offered you a 30 round mag. for it then ask him to fit the mag in the mag well. If it fits the MISR has been
converted already. Now here is where you may have concerns. In order to legally have a hi-cap post ban AK there has to
be a correct number of USA Manufactured parts in the weapon. If you want the pistol grip configuration and a hi-cap
capability then you may wish to look at the SAR Romanian, as they come with the correct parts count already. Both the
MAADI and the SAR series are a good way to get started in the AK world and with their relatively limited investment
you will have a lot of fun customizing your rifle with all of the after market products that are available. Do be careful of
your legal parts counts, if you have the luck I sometimes do (bad) as soon as I would closed the rifle in the trunk of my car while
parked in the dealers parking lot, some ATF agent would walk up to me and say "son, let us take a look at that fine looking
weapon you just placed in your trunk."

If a friendly ATF guy say's "son let me see that fine looking rifle you just put in your trunk", my reply would be "let's see your warrrant @$$hole" Fortunately here in Alabama, we don't see too much of those guys.

The SAR-1 is a fantastic rifle, if you get one with out canted block and front site. Most of the "problem" rifles assembled by Century were made in 1999.

Mine is a 2000 and is a very reliable weapon, and at $325 you can't beat its value.

Being that I received differing answers on each of the forums I posted this on... I checked my rifle today while I was making a payment on it. The thirty round mag does fit. It is a MISR-10. It was imported by St. something, I couldn't make out the stamp. I figure I'll have it out of layaway by mid Sept. I'll give further reports then.
