Somthing loose in 686P

Hello everyone, I am looking for an opinion from someone who owns this gun or knows it well, when ever I shake the gun something sounds like it is loose inside, the gun still functions but it is bothering me, I took it apart to try and identify the cause of the noise, there was one loose piece that fell out when I took the plate off the side of the gun but it turned out that it was not the piece making the noise because I took it out and shook the gun and could still hear it. I couldnt see anything loose when I shook it while looking at the guts of the gun so I am at a loss. I have fired about 1000 rounds "mostly .357 Mag" out of this gun in the past 2 months since ive owned it. I dont think its the firing pin but I could be wrong.

Anybody have any Idea as to what this mysterious noise is? and if you do should I bring it to an armorer?

Mine too had this rattle noise...not loud, just a faint click sound everytime you turned the gun on its side or upsidedown. I think its part of the trigger system falling in and out of place...its never affected function on mine. If your really worried about it, take it to a gunsmith and have him give it a once over.

Actually, the noise has been there a while and it never really bothered me, but I just fired 150 rounds out of it today and Im pretty sure it has gotten worse like something has gotten looser

Humm...this maybe slightly off subject, but my new, unfired S&W 329PD sounded like you described beginning when I was holding it upside down while cleaning it- I immediately noticed the hammer would no longer function in double action. Taking the sideplate off found noting obvious (at least to my untrained eye). I'd hoped this $646.00 handgun would be more durable than to break from having oil rubbed onto it...what gives?

I got it.

Sounds like a loose doohickey. It's right behind the whaddayacallit, attached to the thingamajig.

The rattle is normal,it`s just the way they are.Nothing to worry about.Just make sure your sideplate screws are tight.

is there anyway to tighten it?

No. It has to be able to move freely to work. However... the rattle can be stopped by taking off the sideplate an putting a little grease in the groove.

Probably not worth the trouble, but it does work.

Good Luck...

Joe
