Sometimes its okay to blame the gun

Had a bit of a reality check today at
IDPA.
I've always believed one obtains the best
tools for the job, then blames oneself
if they don't get the job done properly.

That's why I've assumed I was the reason
I never shot well with my Colt Government
model. Some days I would shoot passably,
other times my scores suffered.

Gave the Colt to a local gunsmith. He
informed me it was patterning 17 inches
at 50 yards.

He replaced the barrel, added fiber optic
front and Wilson Bomar pattern rear
sights.

Shot IDPA with it today...The difference
was astonishing. Best score I've shot
in almost three years with any gun.

Lesson learned.

A fellow I once knew told me, "I ain't a very good shot, but I am good enough to know when the gun is no damned good."

A little more experience takes care of that sort of problem.

17 inches at 50 yards would be what at 21 feet? That is where 85% or MORE of self-defense shootings take place and most at 10-12 feet. You were never under gunned.
At 50 yards 17 inches would still hit most chest area sizes.

I agree Sport was never undergunned for a lethal encounter on the street. But I think he was at a serious disadvantage for running with the bid dawgs in the competition arena. The pistol I carry for defense shoots like crap compared to my target guns, but we are comparing apples to oranges.

I have to agree with Ankeny.

We often shoot 4 inch targets at
15 or so yards and partially obscured
targets while moving. There's enough
precision shooting required that if
one's gun is off by even a couple of
inches at moderate distances, one is
not going to be competative.

My "reality check" came when I realized
I had "trusted" the gun and doubted my
shooting skills.
I'm sure it happens more than we realize.
We get that new super-turbo wonder gat
and erroneously believe it's tweaked and
ready.

Somehow, inadvertently, without trying, by accident, luckily, my defense guns are extremely accurate and reliable.

Whatsup widdat?

pluspinc,
I don't buy your reasoning a bit.

17 inches at 50 yards would be what at 21 feet?
Theoretically, it would be 2.38"

That is where 85% or MORE of self-defense shootings take place and most at 10-12 feet. You were never under gunned.
What about the other 15% of the shootings?

At 50 yards 17 inches would still hit most chest area sizes.
If you aimed center of mass, that means you have about 8.5" leeway either side - also, I think 17" width is stretching the torso size just a little.

I doubt seriously you'd carry a GM only capable of 17" at 50yds.
