Someone please help with 870 front sight dilemma...

Ok, so here's the deal - my 870 came with a wickedly crooked front bead sight so I decided to dremel and sand it off, sight ramp and all. I'm now trying to find an easy, low cost alternative to mounting a flip up front sight (picatinny mounted)... I have a Mesa Tactical 8 round side saddle with rail for the rear sight already. I've considered getting one of those cheap clamp down ebay dealies with the small bit of rail and then mounting it upside down with the rail facing up but am unsure if this would work or be safe. Another option I've considered is getting the ATI SBS4400 - Shotforce Muzzle Mount and mounting it upside down (rail up). Yet ANOTHER option I've been considering is using an Armalite .875" picatinny gas block, boring out the inside slightly and then contouring the bottom to sit properly with my mag extension. The last option seems great but I fear I lack the machining skills to pull it off properly AND it's a bit pricey... But I will do it if none of the other options are viable. Please, someone with some experience or insight into this situation, help me! I would forever be in debt.. I'm pulling my hair out here.

Regards,
Shao

Why not drill and tap for a new bead? or easy enough just drill the hole for the threads to slide into and red lock tight her in there? seems like the easiest option.

Well...

The top front bit of the barrel looks a bit scruffy now that I've dremeled and sanded it so I was hoping for an option that would allow me to cover up the damage while allowing me to mount a flip up front sight.

Thanks for the idea though...

There are several folks out there that produce Banded front sights for scatterguns. The sight below is a starting point http://www.xssights.com/store/shotgun.html

Royal Arms also makes one that I have mounted. The good news is that you can adjust right and left on these sights easily. Bad news is that they look a bit clunky. However, with all the stuff hanging off of scatterguns these days it should not be a problem.

Any flip up sight you find will be designed for an AR-15. I did what one of the other posters suggested, I drilled and tapped my front sight. Now I can change the front sight to whatever I want so long as it has the same threads. If you are planning on runing an optic on your messa rail, your backup irons will be taller than your optic, unless you plan on using a riser. Just my .02 cents.

Thanks for the tip about the banded front sight. One problem though - I can't find any specs on how long the band is. The rear sight base measures at 1 1/2" but I can't find any info on the front. I was considering mounting one of those UTG 3 slot universal shotgun barrel mounts rail up and then installing the BUIS onto that... Would that be a good idea?

My best advice is to call XS sights for a spec sheet. I do not currently have a sight to measure.

I am not current on this nomenclature, so unless you are a bit more specific I can not answer your question with any confidence.
