Someone convince me!

Ever since I got my SAR1 I have been debating whether or not to get a SAR2. I hear it has a flatter trajectory along with a bullet that creates devastating wounds. Okay, I just need more convincing!:D

Buy it!

If you need convincing, you'd better be convinced real quick!

Century is out of SAR2's and will not be importing more due to poor sales. AIM, Burns Bros./Wholsale G&A etc. and the other major wholesalers are almost, if not completely out as well.

Remaining stock is now all at the individual dealer/store level for the most part. Prices are now over $300 and even approaching $400 in some areas. (like mine :( )

I just put 50% down on one at my local gun shop today on my lunch break. They wanted $399, I had no real choice because while there's $350 ones still out there to be had, I'd still be paying $399 with shipping and FFL transfer on a mail-order anyway. :( Galling for what was a $229 rifle just 5 weeks ago.

Usual caveats apply as with any SAR, make sure the front sight base isn't canted, and that the orange Bakelite polymer East German mil-surp magazines will lock and remove properly.

Otherwise 5.45x39 is a nifty round. While a bit slower than .223/5.56NATO at only ~3000fps at muzzle, it's bullet construction gaurantees tumbling and excellent energy dump in targets. According to an inverview with Kalashnikov himself, the bullet was originaly a cost saving measure by the Soviets. The lead core is only swaged into a cylinder shape and is not pointed underneath the normal spitzer pointed cupro-nickle jacket. It later was discovered that the gap between the core and the point of the jacket gave the core room to slide forward inside the jacket on impact, allowing the center of mass to shift, causing instant tumbling.

Extra mags are dirt cheap right now. Tapco has them for $6 each in a 4 mag deal for $24 with a pouch, strippers, and a cleaning kit. The discussion forums on ak-47.net can point you to other cheap sources such as Chief Thunder/Magua as well. There is also does not seem to be as much of a run on 5.45x39 as there is on 7.62x39 right now. And when things are normal, $89 for a 1K case is not unusual with the various on-line and mail-order houses.

If you can't find a SAR2 anywhere, I'd reccomend looking up www.tenneseeguns.com, they have 5.45 AK's built on Bulgarian parts kits, with US parts to comply with sec. 922r. Those on ak-47.net that had them seemed happy.

Good luck
Andrew

GET IT!!!!!!!

I thought I wasn't too into Russian guns anymore until I fired one of those things a few months ago.

Make sure you check it over real well. I've heard a few complaints about Sights being crooked and things being bent on them. But a they are Great Guns.
