I think the lack of reporting on the insurgents has something to do with political correctness. If the press started printing bad things about them, the press may be trying to unfairly villianize them :barf: and be spreading propoganda.
But, I think it has A LOT to do with getting big headlines. Obviously, the bad guys are the bad guys so printing bad stuff about them isn't nearly as interesting as printing bad stuff about the good guys. The media is no more pure than any other industry. The big companies all want to make money selling their story.
As far as the part about the military "lying" to the media about the beginning of the offensive, I think the press wanted a nice juicy invasion for their headlines and when they only got feints and diversions, which aren't very interesting, decided to make headlines by saying the military lied to them.
