Holding out hope for a country that used to be.
At 2:30 a.m. November 8, 2000, the tragic status of our country became crystal clear. America is a country divided.
The last decade has documented a country that cast away it's unity, purpose, direction and patriotism. No longer do we call ourselves citizens of the United States of America. We play to the evil of Politically Correct, and divide this nation under the lie of "diversity". Rather than creating a nation that is secure and confident in it's identity, we have ripped the very fabric of what made this country great. We mock the foundations of our Republic by complying with the bigoted practice of ethnic sub-classes and life-style based demographics. You and I are not "Ethnic group of your choice"-Americans, "Lifestyle of your choice"-Americans or "Religion of your choice"-Americans. WE ARE AMERICANS.
Alienation. Separation. Classification. Factionalization. These are the instruments of our destruction. The long ago words of Jesus, tell us the truth today: "A house divided against itself cannot stand." The United States is a house divided. Pick a topic: morality, race, politics, economy, civics, recreation, the list could go on and on. As a populace, we have stopped striving for the good of our nation, and settled for fighting about our special interest.
I suppose you can argue that we have always been like this. Perhaps that argument holds some validity, however, I submit that it is irrelevant to our current plight. Throughout our history we have experienced discord; of that there is no doubt. If that was the only product of our existence I believe the U.S. would have faded into the mists of time long ago. Just as often, if not the majority of our time, we have been a global enigma. We have a legacy of national pride. America has been the envy of the world, for we exemplify all that is possible when men are allowed to till the field of liberty. At times we have snubbed the world with our collective ego, but damn if esprit doesn't occasionally show itself at some in-opportune times; just ask a freshly graduated Marine recruit sometime.
National Identity, solidarity, direction, pride, humility and patriotism. These virtues make a nation great. These virtues make a nation endure. I don't know when these things became unfashionable, but I know what their absence has created. Blame it on the leadership if you will. (I think we grow too comfortable with blaming others) Just remember this: greatness is not a thing easily acquired, and it is all too easily lost. Only vigilance and sacrifice will preserve it.
Will we see the great America again? I don't know. Only this last few months marks the beginning of my own vigilance and sacrifice. I pray that I am not too late in getting off my long side-lined seat. For what lies ahead; I will continue to hold out hope for a country that used to be.
