Some help with 410 and 000 buckshot

The plan is to reload 410 for my Taurus Public Defender Judge poly. My sons enjoy shooting the 410 over the 45 long colt. I get them the Federal 410 handgun loads with 4 pellets of 000 buck. I have spent most of the week and a little money trying to learn more about reloading 410. I reload only handgun rounds 9mm, 45ACP among others. For help I purchased Lyman's shot shell and Ballistics products Small bore manual for 410 reload data. I want to reload 000 buck 3 or 4 pellets safely. I can't find any info on this and don't want to reload by 000 buck weight and have over pressure issues.

Example: 410 Winchester 296 14.5 (1/2 shot oz.) (218 shot grains)

My thinking is I have 000 buck each .360 diameter Ball, 70.04 grains. so 3 pellets of 000 buck equals around 210 grains. Under the load data 218 shot grains.

I purchased BPI Multi-Hull Shotshell Hulls 410 Bore 2-1/2, Winchester 209 primers, WAA410HS and BPI Shotshell Wads 410 Bore Stretch-36. Also have a Lee .360 ball mold for making my own shot. The only Powder I can get locally is Winchester 296.

Not sure what to trust at this point, I was reading something about not to use wads with 000 buck. So my question is if I stay at or a little below the reload data max total load in shot grains at the 1/2 shot oz. is this a problem when it come to 000 buck. I feel because i'm reloading 000 buck and to avoid pressure issues if the data says 14.5gr. of W296 I should back off a little and start my load test at maybe 13gr. and work up from there. I would like to make a load with 3 pellets of 000 buck.

First I would take one of the factory 000 rounds apart to see how they solved the wad issue and copy that, then work up a load.

what tools are you loading them with? A MEK or equivalent or using a hammer and other hand tools?

I can give you some pointers if needed. I viewed seating the primer as the biggest challenge. Had one go off on me with the hammer method. Not fun and not something I want to do again.

Do you have a conventional center fire reloading press?

A Lee #5 shell holder for the 300 Win Mag cartridge family fits the 410 shotshell. The problem is the hole in the center of the shell holder is too small for 209 shotshell primers.

I have a Dremel so I bought a 5/16" grinding stone and reamed the hole larger.

Then I bought a Lee Ram Prime and found a roofing nail with a 1/8" shaft whose head size fit through the enlarged hole in the shell holder.

Now I can de-prime and seat new primers on my standard bench mount reloading press. It works on the Lee Classic Cast and Redding Ultramag presses no problem and I'm sure it will work with any 7/8-14 press with a tall enough throw to accommodate the 410 shell.

I also have the base for an RCBS Ram Prime and use it with a 1/4" bolt whose hex head I filed down to fit through the hole in the shell holder. Same idea as the Lee Ram Prime just a bit different configuration.

Thank you all. I plan on using hand tools a universal Lee depriming die with a Lee #5 shell holder. Also going to roll crimp with drill. I used the following info and using this method with a few changes http://beforeitsnews.com/self-sufficiency/2013/10/homemade-410-reloading-kit-2463934.html

Powder Primer Wads Charge
Winchester 296 Win. 209 WAA410HS 15.8 10,100 PSI 1,200
Winchester 296 Win. 209 WAA410HS 16.3 10,300 PSI 1,250
Winchester 296 Win. 209 WAA410HS 17.2 11,200 PSI 1,300

This Data is for 1/2 oz. load for 218 grains of shot weight. With 3 000# buck, weight should be around 210gr. to 218gr.

Reloading in .410 2-1/2" Remington STS Hulls

I got a Lee .360 70.04gr. ball mold but now thinking I may have problems getting them to fit in wad and hull.

This is what I plan on trying, 5 rounds each. Just hope I did my homework and get it right.

Thank you flashhole, I do have a Lee ram primer and going to give that a go. Will make priming much faster I think. I got a 410 bore Resize Ring for a MEC 600 reloading press to resize the brass portion of the hull.

And a lot safer. If a primer goes off it does so with authority and it's not a fun experience.

Remember you need to open the hole in the shell holder. A drill won't get it done because the steel is hardened. The grinding stone did it handily.
