Here is a link to a report by The Institute of Justice. They did the report at the request of The Department of Justice and U.S. Congress. The whole purpose of the report was to track the effects of the Assault Weapons Ban and determine if it served to lower crime.
There are actually two reports. The first came out only a year or two after the ban had been in effect. The second report came out in 2003 and was much longer. 80 pages or so.
I have seen this report quoted many times by anti-gunners. My own senator likes to pull statistical figures out of context from it. Like any governmental report that is 80 pages long, it is full of statistics that can be hard to understand, and often seem to contradict each other.
But this is the really interesting thing. If you read it, you will find that the report does more to argue against the AWB than for it. They conclude, among other things, that the effect of the ban on crime, if it had any effect at all, is so small that they are unable to even measure it!
If reading through the whole thing is too much at first, try reading the introduction, the first and last sentence of each paragraph and the summary.
Make sure that when you introduce this report in your paper that you mention the fact that the report was presented BY the government FOR the very Congress that enacted the ban in the first place. This is not coming from the NRA or any other pro-gun group, but from their OWN report.
Anyhow, here is the link:
