Some Good reading on the 9MM

Interesting... Doesn't surprise me at all, but if it weren't for the "caliber wars", what would we have to talk about? :D:D

Amen

Amen to that. I have always been a 9mm shooter for all the reasons in that article. By the way 9mm ball penetrates way more than .45 ball.

I like Speer Lawman Gold Dots in 124g +p. But Win 115g Silvertips are good too and cheap.

If your life is on the line, grab the gun you practice with most because under extreme stress you don't want to grab a higher caliber that you don't shoot often. Since 9mm ammo is cheap, most will practice with it. This is not advice for those who always practice with higher calibers.

the main problem I have with 9mm is that casing pressure cannot exceed 32,000 psi...no body loads even close to that..28,000psi is the limit...the reason why is depending on how the gun is drawn and how the powder is "laying" in the casing is can be as low as 18,000 psi..I dunno..im not a fan of 9mm in a defensive caliber I do own them for the reason that the low recoil means I can shoot cans all day and have fun...i dont generally follow wound diameter as being that critical..I do follow the shock cavity potential of the load as being the decisive factor..this is factored on the energy potential of the load..of course..I do follow the thought that says who cares..I want a defensive load that puts two holes in the target..that way you bleed out both ends..my 2 cents..HK-out

Gee, if you don't like the 9mm for pressure reasons, you must hate the .45ACP!

Nope I enjoy the 45 Acp

I posted this for Information purpose! Not as to my liking or disliking of any caliber.

Interesting.....every argument for premium 9X19 by Mr. Green could also be made for premium .38 special.

Sam...my favorite 9mm is the 9X32R.

Very good article and it explains well why I shoot a lot of 9mm. I prefer big bores but shoot more 9mms. I bookmarked the sight. Regards, Richard

After reading a lot of posts by handloaders (and 9mm fans), and being reminded by HK1 that most commercial 9mm is "downloaded" from max capacity, I am under the impression that 9mm can be loaded up to almost (?) the same performance as factory .357 (or .357 SIG).

Of course, factory .357 can be loaded up, too.

And some of the hot factory loads, like Cor-Bon, seem pretty close to .357 mag.

So if a hot 9mm performs nearly on par with the .357 mag, why the concern about stopping power?

PaulTx,

I was pretty sure SAAMI +P was 38,500 standard pressure was 35,700, and CIP (Euro Spec) was about 43,500.

SAAMI = 35K, 38.5K +P, 55K(?) GA ammo.....

I'm pretty sure I don't care (much) about pressure in 9x19.

I'm also pretty sure that my 115g JHP +P+ load(s) are effective.

Not all 'commercial ammo' is down-loaded; some is 'up-loaded'.
HahahahahahahahahahaKB!

Does this mean I shouldn't carry 22LR for defense anymore?

Get yourself a box of NATO spec ammo by Winchester. You'll have all the pressure than you can handle.
