Sold on Ruger

I recently accidentally dropped the slide of my old, beat-up LCP off a second story balcony onto the concrete walk below and damaged it so that it couldn't fit back on the frame. I sent the gun in to Ruger asking if there was anything they could do to fix it, and telling them that if they could fix it to go ahead and do so and send me a bill. When I got an automated phone call from FedEx just a couple of days later, indicating that it had been sent back, I thought for sure that Ruger couldn't (or wouldn't) repair ye olde LCP and was sending back my broken gun to be sent off to the gun graveyard. Imagine my surprise when the gun arrived the next day and I opened the box and saw that Ruger had replaced the slide, barrel and all the other parts, all for free. It looks and feels like a brand new gun. And they didn't charge me a single cent. I got so much for nothing, I actually almost feel guilty.

Ruger kicks ass and can have my business anytime. Just ordered 100 rounds of Hydra-Shok (my chosen carry round) from Midway and will go to the range and see how this baby functions in a few days. But given Ruger's stellar reputation, I seriously doubt there'll be any problems.

There's one downside to this situation though: now I don't have any excuse to buy that Kahr CW380 I had my eye on...:(

That's one of many reasons prople like Ruger. Their customer service is excellent. Not to mention they make great guns right here in the USA.

Ruger repaired the ejectors on my Red Label, even though I was like the forth owner, for free. And sent me a new selection of choke tubes when they sent it back.

Also. to a ten year old me, the nice people at the Ruger factory sending him a free 10/22 stock after he wrote to tell that his was cracked and starting to warp was a great one to win a customer for life.

ive also had a very positive experience with their service recently. after a polish job on my gp100 turned up a trigger plunger ( disconnector ) and a cylinder stop latch that did not always properly engage, ruger sent me the new parts for free. I know the parts were not expensive and they could've been ordered from brownells, but I would rather pay more $ for factory parts not only that but manufacturers usually don't smile upon the performing of such work by the consumer. #1 on ruger.

That's seriously impressive service. That should have been a billed repair, at the very least a nominal fee.

They know how to run the long game at Ruger. That small loss probably bought them a lifetime of good word of mouth from you.

A bit off topic, but at my LGS, this guy was complaining about his LCR's Cylinder "shaving the material off the frame", to which the store owner replied, "About all the 'Ruger' is out of Ruger today, their customer service is crap, their guns are crap, they're just not a good company." I laughed to myself and moved on. Of course these were the same idiots that had surplus 7.62x54R marked up to $10/20. Still reeling from that. I like Ruger, they haven't let me down yet. :D

Sent my mini last week, anxious to get it back and see if they do anything with it. Couldn't keep 5 rounds in 6". I have 6 rugers, they are all (with the noted exception) great accurate firearms. Underrated IMO. My gp100 is a fantastic shooter and my lcp will surprise anyone. First experience with their cs, hoping it's a good one.

ruger sent me the new parts for free
I've been a Ruger fan for years, they have also sent me parts at no charge. Actually now that I think about it, Ruger has never charged me for a part or repair. I think their business and customer service policies are reflected in their growth over recent years.

Fortunately I haven't had to avail myself of Ruger's customer service, but I am a fan of the SP101 I bought last winter.

I bought a used Ruger MKII pistol about 15-20 years ago for a good price. It ran flawlessly, just that there were strange spots on one side where the bluing was gone or nearly so. I tried touching it up with cold blue, but made it worse. Called Ruger to see about a refinishing. They said send it in and they would fix it up like new and bill me. I got a bill in the mail 10 days later for $25. Itemized it said re-bluing, new extractor, all new springs, recoil guide rod and return shipping. Paid them via personal check. Got my pistol back and the bluing was better than any new MKII that I have ever seen. They must have buffed it extra good before bluing. I still like Ruger’s and now own 5 of them, four I bought new, so they got their money back from me.

I bought a well-loved, but lightly used 1993 Super Blackhawk sometime between 1998 and 2000.
...and then proceeded to wear it out.

In November 2012, I sent it to Ruger with a request to fix a timing issue, a cylinder made with the new process, all new hardware (screws, pins, etc), and a trigger job. And, I asked them to please call me with a quote for the work, before they started.

Come February, I still hadn't heard from Ruger, but was finally able to get ahold of repair center customer service.
They looked up the status and told me it was "checked out for range testing" and that it would likely ship in 3-5 days.

I was informed that my cost would be $0.00.
When it arrived, the following had been done:

-Replaced barrel and front sight (billboard on the bottom! :D).
-Replaced cylinder.
-Replaced base pin.
-Replaced rear sight.
-Replaced ejector shroud (with steel).
-Replaced hammer (for the "trigger job").
-Replaced locking pawl (not in the paperwork, but it isn't the original).
-Replaced all hardware (every pin, every screw).
-Replaced all springs (undocumented, but they aren't the originals).
-Full refinish and re-blue.
-Shipped back via 2nd-Day Air

So...
They pretty much just built me a new revolver, using my frames, grips, and a few small parts; and refinished everything to match.

At that point, it was 20 years old with many thousands of rounds through it, but, yet, "new / unfired". ;)

And the photo they sent of the test group at the range showed a 0.6" 6-shot group (I believe it was at 15 yards, but don't remember for certain ).

I really wish they would have communicated better, but I can't complain about the 'new' gun.

Oh... And your story immediately reminded me of the infamous "LA Freeway" 1911 that Springfield Armory repaired a few years ago.

The thread starts with a lack of desire to explain what happened, but the story is here: on page 2, post #43.

You can read through the rest of the thread for some good jokes, and Springfield's handling of the repair.

I just read through that whole "LA Freeway" thread, what a story! If that had been my gun I would have been 100% sure it was a total loss. That heavy of a repair for $150 was unreal.

Ruger has always done right by me.
I did send in one of my 44mags for a new barrel.
The forcing cone was wasted from years of heavy hot loads.
I was already prepared to cover all cost.
Ruger called and said they would not cover the cost of the barrel ($80.00) because they felt is was caused by"excessive" abuse but would cover all labor involved.
I got the feeling if I had pushed the matter they would have covered it all but the wear was clearly from abuse.

I once ordered a screw for a old 3 screw 357.
When the package arrived it had a note explaining that screw was no longer available and gave instructions on how to file and fit the new screw.
The note also said if I did not want to do the fix to call them and they would cover all shipping cost and to send the gun back to them for repair.
Took about 10 minutes to file and fit and works just like new.

I have never bought a new Ruger revolver and never regretted buying them used. They have all been great guns.

I have had to replace a few wear parts on my old 3 screw flattop revolvers but every one of those guns is over 50 years old and I know I have shot the snot out of them over the years.

I swear by Ruger.
Strong, affordable and durable firearms with great customer service.

Update: Finally got down to the range this morning to test her out and she ran like a champ. I put a hundred rounds of hydra-shok down range without a single hiccup. As far as accuracy is concerned, this gun isn't a tack driver, but it's combat accurate and can easily hold minute of bad guy at 20 ft, which is good enough for me.

Like I said, I'm sold. Ruger can have my business any time.

I know you guys have been talking about Ruger handguns, but since acquiring my first Ruger M77UL in 1984, I have never bought any other brand, including an SP101. I have never had to make use of their customer service, because I have never had a problem with any of my Rugers. I don't even live in the USA and I am hooked on Ruger!

I love me some Rugers. I've owned many, still own a few and the only one that ever needed anything was a Security Six. It was so old (and I paid so little for it) that it never occurred to me to contact customer service.

They are under rated in my book and are often under priced. I'm always on the lookout for a good deal and Rugers are tops on my list.

Ruger has always done right by me. While I never had to send a gun to them for repairs, they sent me parts free of charge even when I offered to pay for them.

While we are on the topic I have also had great dealings with S&W and Beretta. With S&W I once sent in a Model 60 which was not under warranty that had a broken hammer pin. They not only fixed the hammer pin free of charge, but they sent it back with a brand new cylinder, all new internals, a new sideplate, and refinished the gun. I also had a problem with my Beretta and no questions asked Beretta shipped me a brand new gun since mine was out of spec.

I sent my SR22 pistol in about six months ago. It had over ten thousand rounds through it. They changed the barrel, mag disconnect and ejector all free of charge. Luckily, they left the trigger alone it is perfect at this point. The slide had/has minor wear, but not enough to be replaced maybe after another ten thousand. I spent a lot of time in the lead lines to get those bulk 22lr. value packs, and luckily I still have a few boxes left. It's still near impossible to get 22lr. at a decent price.
