Soft points to compensate for lower muzzle velocity?

A dedicated varmint bullet should still expand well. (.223) Winchester is now making a light (45 grain?) JHP in their economical white box. Very accurate, too.
The typical Soviet HP available in 7.62x39mm has been described as an underpenetrator and overly fragmentary from typical 20" bl, so it should work well.
I don't have any info on 5x39.

I'd say yes IF your SBR (what else has an 11 inch barrel?) will reliably feed them. My 223 mak 90 will feed winchester 55 gr soft points just like all other 55 gr. ammo. I'd imagine after heavy shooting you'd need to wipe the chamber where the soft nose might leave a streak of lead over time. hmm.. unless you has a car 15 with a 11.5 inch barrel with the 5 inch supressor??
At "low" velocity from a short barrel a bullet can still expand/mushroom. I'm not sure nato ss109 will, but I'm darn sure softpoint will... IF you hit enough mass. (a 30-06 165 gr softpoint may NOT expand if you hit an antelope in both lungs.. there just isn't enough bone mass/meat to substantiannly open up the bullet. The exit hole looks nearly identicle to the entry.) in a 223 or 5.45 sov, the lighter wieght bullet SHOULD mushroom, given the lower mass and high velocity compared to a full sized rifle bullet.
Avoid 'varmint" rounds as they are designed to break up quickly, and are not designed to penetrate deeply. Those nylon tipped hornadys might look cool, but those are designed for vaporizing woodchucks and prarie dogs, NOT for ventilating more dangerous animals.
