Socom 16 and varients?

What's up with the Socom 16's and their varients. Just about every time I go to the range, I'm distracted by some guy curseing at his rifle. When I look to see what's going on, I am shocked to see that it always seems to be some guy who bought a Socom 16 or it's varient. The ones that I have seen so far are being plagued with jams and improper feeding. It can't be a coincidence because I've seen it many times on different days with different shooters.
I was thinking of buying a Socom, but now I'm a little worried that something is going wrong in the manufacturing process?
Any additional comments on this subject?

I dont think it would be a manufacturing problem.

I think it has to do that the M1 and the later M14/M1A was designed to be used with a certian gas system and them just cutting it down using the same bullets to push the same bolt might be at fault.

The shorter gas tube doesnt allow enough gasses into the system I think to properly cycle the bolt. Thats my most educated guess though. :o

Have not seen or heard of any problems except on a couple of shooting forums.
I've owned my SOCOM 16 for about a year and a half and really like it. 840 rounds of mil surplus so far (Aussie and South African) with no problems. I did have some extracting problems with commercial brass that I reloaded with BLC-2. Changed to LC brass and went to IMR 4895 pushing 150 gr Hornady SST's @ 2640 fps. 75 rounds with no problems and very accurate. Might even bust a whitetail with it this year.:D

The SOCOM doesn't just have a shortened M14 gas system. It is actually redesigned and all the bugs may not be completely worked out. Most of the Bush and Scout rifles(with a 2" longer barrel) have zero problems.

I've heard of more satisfied owners than one's with problems. If it was me, as cool as the SOCOM is, I'd probably go with the Bush rifle.

A guy I work with bought one and has sent it back twice for FTEing. He got it back two weeks ago, so we took it to the range. It extracted, but would feed the next round. It did this about 5 times out of 100 rounds.

He's not very happy with it. He's shooting American Eagle and Federal match. The socom was acting the same with both. I've seen the problems first hand.

I agree with Mathman. I own a Socom 16 and an M1A national match, I’ve put about 750 rounds of Australian military surplus into each and both have performed flawlessly.

2000+ rounds of military surplus through my Socom and no problems. I rip it up too. Get the barrel hotter then hell and I couldnt be happier.

A good friend of mine has one, less than 3 months old and has sent the bolt back to Springfield twice now. Seems to be having some catastrophic problems with the rollers. Springfields customer service has been outstanding though.

it seems odd that a battle rifle manufacturer would put a knowingly flawed rifle system on the market and claim it is used for protecting oneself. IF the rifle is fraud...iow, not meant to be a reliable rifle as a deceptive and malicious trick, then they should admit that and go out of business in shame.

perhaps there really arent the problems with the rifle that posters here a claiming.

I bought mine in 2009. It never malfunctions. I use only 7.62 mm (not .308) in it.

So if there were some initial problems in the rifle I can't tell.

All I can say is mine's perfect.

Springfield M1a rifles have always had a sh1tty reputation. I've read about the problems for years on the forums. People don't realize that Sprinfield is not the legendary gun maker from the old days. It's a marketing company that imports mediocre junk and makes a lot of money by slapping a famous name on that junk.

I have three Springfield Armory Inc. M1A rifles.A Standard,a Bush (it was a Scout until I removed the forward scope mount),and a Socom 16.All of them function absolutely perfectly all the time, and are some of the finest rifles in my collection. Not junk.

I just got a lightly used SOCOM 16 and used Federal American Eagle 7.62 x 51 168gr OTM load for its first session...I shot 60 rounds in 5 & 10 round chains over an hour without any functioning problems; I will try some Austrailian surplus to see how it functions
