Paul Rolly's Column (Tribune, June 11) concerning the failure of the "Safe to Learn, Safe to Worship" petition drive reports that, according to one petition organizer, the petition failed because of "Soccer moms who quite frankly worried about what might happened if they encountered an angry gun owner when they knocked on a door. The result was that the petitions sat gathering dust on a lot of kitchen drain boards."

Assuming that this fear of "angry gun owners" indeed played a role in the failure of the petition, then a fair question to ask is, "Who created this fear?" Gun controllers have for years been peddling the lie that gun owners (about half of all Americans) are dangerous rednecks. Apparently a number of "soccer moms" believed them. I can only interpret this to mean that the petition drive failed in part because its supporters fell victim to their own propaganda. How ironic!

Yet they (the anits) are the ones that are violent during encounters at rallies, etc.. Because of the propaganda there are many gun owning Americans that hide the fact that they own guns from friends, neighbors and co-workers. Many of those soccer moms would be surprised to learn that several of their close friends co-workers and even own family members have guns. Yet they have not be attacked by any of them.
Maybe they didn't distribute the material out of laziness. Maybe they did believe their own propaganda. Or maybe, just maybe, it is because they figure that they have lied and harrassed gun owners to the point that we have a right to be pissed off.
