so you're brand new and have never owned a gun. you have decided you need to cover all your bases. what rifles, shotguns and handguns do you need to "cover all your bases" ? your limit is a total of 10 guns, what types, actions, brands and caliber/guages do you get? remember you have to cover all your bases....whatever they may be.

44- that's kinda what I was thinking. Bases? At first thought, I figured 3: Rifle, Pistol, Shotgun. Then got to thinking, could expand that to Varmint rifle & Everything else rifle- 4 bases.

My pistols could be stretched to Bullseye .22, CF, .45- then a CC and a larger carry around out in the sticks.

Either way, I still can't make it to 10 bases because I personally have no need for more than 1 shotgun (although I try to enjoy the whole collection of everything- I still only come up with 8 bases.)

fun, funny thread...you need to define what you want to do with these weapons first, and why you wish to purchase them..but I'll play.

.22 cal rifle, .22 revolver and good target .22 semi-auto pistol.
Centerfire revolver and pistol that match your .22's. caliber of your choice.
20 ga and/or 12 ga shotgun.
Good target/hunting rifle...Rem 700 is a good bolt action. Has served me since 1964. Maybe 2, one in a lighter caliber like .257 Roberts. I don't particularly like .308, I'm more into 6.5mm (my Rem 700 is a .264)
Depending on what you prefer, I personally do not, some sort of AR, 6.5 mm is a good caliber. Oldest daughter has one and it is very accurate (and was quite expensive)

Hermanr

I chose based on the several reason's I can percieve for needing a firearm .

1) Personal, and home protection

2) Putting meat on the table

3) Recreation

Heck, even if "all your bases" means essentially every conceivable need for a firearm, I can do it in 10.

1) O/U shotgun
2)Bolt action rifle in 7mm-08
3)Bolt action in 375 H&H
4)Double rifle in the 460/470/500 realm
5)Defensive handgun (Glock 29)
6)Semi-auto shotgun for home defense
7)Varmint gun, bolt action is my preference but semi would do, 22-250
8)Muzzleloader, smokeless Savage ML10II
9)"Plinker" in 22LR
10)1911, because. I could also see putting a true long-distance weapon here, like a 338 Lapua or 50BMG but I'd rather have a 1911, just because I would.

What could any normal person want to do with a gun that those 10 wouldn't cover?

I agree with those who said you have to know what your needs are before making a list. This list will take care of anything on the North American Continent, urban or rural.

1. A .357 magnum revolver, four inch barrel. Can be loaded light or heavy to take most game though the next gun on the list would be preferable for medium or larger game. It makes an excellent home defense weapon and can be open carried and concealed carry with a jacket or sweatshirt. My personal choice would be a SW K-frame like the Model 19.

2. .44 mag revolver with six inch barrel; probably a single action Ruger for strength purposes. To hunt medium or larger game or to carry for emergency use when in "bear country."

3. Small .380 for concealed carry wearing just about any clothing. Choices include Ruger LCP, Sig P238, Kel-Tec 3PAT, and similar. My personal choice would be the Sig P238.

4. AR-15 style rifle. Everyone needs to have a rifle that is compatible with our nation's standard military long gun. Many choices. I have the SW M&P Tactical.

5. A 12 gauge pump shotgun. These include Remington Model 870, Ithaca Model 37, and Mossberg 500 series. I have the latter two. The shotgun is extremely versatile for hunting and home defense.

6. A .22LR handgun for possible hunting but mostly for plinking and target practice. I like the Ruger MK-II.

7. A .22LR rifle, again for possible hunting but mostly for plinking and target practice.

8. A bolt action .30-06 or, possibly, a .308. Properly loaded, a .30-06 or .308 can take any game in North America though grizzlies and polar bears would stretch their capabilities. Remington, Savage, others.

9. A .243 bolt action rifle for flat shooting at small/medium sized game and varmints.

10. Wildcard - either a .410 gauge pump for small game or a .45 1911 because life's too short to carry an ugly gun.

I should add that some the caliber choices are because ammo is widely available. For example, a .243 might not be the best caliber for the use mentioned, you'll probably find some ammo for it just about anywhere you go.
