So why are we trying to keep guns away from kids?

You're right, DNS.

But the reason is very likely the fact that people are trying to keep kids utterly ignorant about guns!

Kinda circular.

I dunno - I guess my situation was different - growing up in very rural western Nebraska sandhills. I got my first .22 single shot rifle for my 6th birthday in 1932. My dad was not as rifleman but was a shotgun hunter and he taught me gun safety - I have not yet had any ND or any kind of gun incident - but it could happen if I let my guard down.

Here I am a year or two later with my "trophies" in a picture taken by a proud dad.

Kids that have an interest can be taught to handle guns responsibly by responsible parents but, both have to have the interest and motivation.

OJ, I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and say that it's very very unlikely you will ever "let your guard down" and have an ND.

I also have never had one (in 13 years of gun owning and 25 years since I got my first BB gun). Good habits and procedures are good habits and procedures, and knowing when to keep your d***ed finger off the trigger is knowing when to keep your finger off the trigger.

I think that no one wants to be honest about it, but those who have them more than likely did something they knew they should not be doing at the time.

Twelve year old in linked story is being raised right , being parented, learning to be a self reliant , reponsible individual.

I was at a Cowboy Action Shoot, they have a Buckaroo Class. Those kids were shooting smaller caliber guns with the adults over the same course of fire. They were darn good to boot.

here is a pic of one of them....I hope some bad guys dont break in on that lil buckaroo when she has her pair of six shooters

At the range I belong to, we have jr rifle club, and the boys and girls ages from around 8 and up get instructions on the safty , care , and shooting of 22 rifles. very closely supervised but they are getting hands on experience. At the last session that I observed their were 10 or 12 kids. I thought this was excellent.
