So which company is taking the torch and designing

a .495 BMG rifle, to sell to our California brethren, for their long range competitions, since Arnie banned fifty caliber weapons? I assume it's just a matter of time before someone does so, thus forcing the legis-idgits in Sacramento to scramble around looking for a definition using case capacity, etc., that will crystallize the absurdity of their claims in the public debate.

Yeah, that's interesting. It says that it is Cali-legal. But how do they get around the fed DD law? I thought the BATFE had to issue a written exception to the DD for each weapon/cartridge allowed that is over .50, in their infinite wisdom and benevolence. I do get a certain meausure of glee, however, from the fact that the existing law caused an even BIGGER round to be sold, rather than a slightly smaller one, if this holds up.

The federal law in which "Destructive Device" is defined is TITLE 26 > Subtitle E > CHAPTER 53 > Subchapter B > PART I > § 5845
http://assembler.law.cornell.edu/uscode/html/uscode26/usc_sec_26_00005845----000-.html

(f) Destructive device
The term “destructive device” means
(1) any explosive, incendiary, or poison gas
(A) bomb,
(B) grenade,
(C) rocket having a propellent charge of more than four ounces,
(D) missile having an explosive or incendiary charge of more than one-quarter ounce,
(E) mine, or
(F) similar device;
(2) any type of weapon by whatever name known which will, or which may be readily converted to, expel a projectile by the action of an explosive or other propellant, the barrel or barrels of which have a bore of more than one-half inch in diameter, except a shotgun or shotgun shell which the Secretary finds is generally recognized as particularly suitable for sporting purposes;

P.S. I emailed Tom Miller at EDM Arms about why this rifle wouldn't be considered a destructive device. I'll report any response here.

The same reason that .600 Nitro Express, .585 Nyati, .577 Tyrannosaur, .700 Nitro Express, .700 JDJ, and .950 JDJ aren't: A "sporting purposes" exemption from the ATF. (ie The round was specifically designed for a sporting purpose, such as long range target shooting or hunting dangerous game, and is not intended as a military cartridge.)

LMAO, :D The anti's in Claifornia will be shooting steam out their ears. Hopefully the BMG ban is repealed. Anti's stick amendments into unrelated bills. Lets get someone to sneak an amendment repealing the 86 "no new auto's" ban. It can't be that hard. :p

Yeah, Tamara. BUT. How is it they are so sure the BATFE will issue such an exemption, given the political firestorm surrounding 50-ish cartridges with very large case capacities? Or is it a done deal? Maybe if they hold a hearing on this exemption, this company should design integral floral patterns into the brass, along with a perfume scent added to the powder, which emanates when fired.

I don't have a lot of knowledge about the particulars of these calibers. I've learned from crosshair's and Tamara's posts. Very interesting.

Thanks. :)

Pure opinion follows - - -

IMHO, someone (EDM) is poking a grizzle bear (state of commie-fornia)through to bars surrounding the cage. :D

The .50 BMG round won't chamber in the 510 DTC EUROP,,,but the 510 DTC EUROP is fireformed by firing a .50 BMG round in a 510 DTC EUROP chamber!!

LMAO!!!!

EDM appears to be using all the available little loopholes to tie up the whole issue into a nice neat ,,,,mess !

OUTSTANDING!!!

MHO is that even if they never sell one, the idea of what they are doing is enough to prove the point of how rediculous the laws are.

Another way to kinda look at it..

Think of all the nusiance lawsuits the anti's are so fond of pulling. All they do is tie up the works. This is like a nusicance product. ;) It will effectivly "tie up the works." (hint DTC = Dan Tec France,,, can you say sabot? as in sabo-tage = literal translation = throw a shoe into the works).

They "ban" the .50 BMG,,ok fine,,here's one that's not only pre-approved,,,it's even bigger (510) and "scarier",,ban this one. So they do.. Ok fine,, here's one (511) that even bigger and scarier yet,,,and pre-approved,,ban this one! etc etc)

Cool eh?

the .50 bmg is .510 eh?

Ooooh, I see....they're trying to have their cake and eat it too (i.e. not have to rebarrel the rifles - just a chamber ream). No, I don't think that will fly - I think the courts would likely call that tantamount to being the same thing - depending on exactly how the law defines the ban. I think it's gonna take something with a different barrel diameter, either small or larger than .510 to make a successful end run and make them look stupid. Agree that this is probably poking a grizzly bear, UNLESS they were dumb enough in the ban to use a simple straightforward definition like "the round known as .50 Browning Machine Gun or .50 BMG is banned" - then I think it's pretty clear that the .510 EDC is NOT the .50 bmg round.

The next person that derides the "slippery slope theory" as hogwash need look no further for a prime example of it's truth. California won't be stopping with the BMG. As soon as they figure out that there's really no difference between the .510 Europ and the .50 BMG, they'll make their ban more general in scope and completely outlaw anything over .500 whether it is for a sporting purpose or not. :(

BTW, Mr. Miller of EDM Arms sent me this response:
Sir,
The 510 DTC EUROP has been renamed the 50 DTC EUROP. The 510 stands for the diameter of the projectile which is exactly the same as is the BMG.
Thank you for inquiring.
Tom

Indeed. In fact, the good folks at the NFAOA forums are already working to make that happen. Look at my siggy.

A little followup on the state of .50cals in California....

1 year later... EDMs .50DTC is doing nicely chambered for their .50DTC-EDM spec.

Serbu too is shipping their BFG-50s chambered for the .50DTC. The example I have will shoot the same forming ammo for the EDM and reload with the CH4D .50DTC-EDM die set too.

Serbu also offers thier BFG Carbine chambered for the M48 spotter.

I've heard from Walter Keller at Safety Harbor Firearms (ultramag50.com) that he's chambering for the 50DTC as well.

Marcos Ruiz of ultralite50.com also sells an M48 spotter version of his rifle.

An aquaintance has a 50DTC rifle on order from StateArms.com too.

Ammunition is being loaded by Jerry Hazlett of AmerICan Ent. in Oklahoma.

Dies are made by CH4D.com (get the DTC-EDM version for U.S. guns)
