So which companies actually make .338 Lap chambered rifles?

I was just having a window-shop on the CZ web-page and I saw not a single .338 Lapua.

I know it is a bit more of a niche chambering, but I'd have still expected them to have one or two.

So which off-the-shelf brands make them?

(I mean regular brands, not the exclusive high-enders such as Desert Tactical etc)

.338 Lapua is always going to be at the high end of price when it comes to rifles regardless of manufacturer. Sako, Savage, and Remington offer/offered rifles chambered in this cartridge. If I was looking for something with near .338 Lapua performance at lower cost I'd look at a .338 RUM.

BTW CZ does or did make a .338 Lapua rifle: CZ 550 Magnum HET .338 Lapua

I've not seen that CZ on sale, and given that the CZ750 costs just under €3000!!

If it has Sako in the name it's also going to cost a bit for sure. Remingtons not so common here. Savages are around but I don't know which are sold.

Probably, possibly, maybe overkill for boar under 200yds... unless I enjoy picking bacon out of trees over a 50ft radius.

"...not a single .338 Lapua..." Too expensive to shoot. Hornady Match ammo runs well over $100Cdn per 20 for a cartridge that doesn't do anything a .308 won't.
A Weatherby TRR runs $2,849.99 here. $2,399.99 for a Savage 110BA. Ain't no commercial hunting rifle worth that kind of money.

All the big names have been mentioned.

In addition to that you have Accuracy International, Prairie Gun Works out of Canada, and Blaser. They all cost a pretty penny.

Ballistically a 300 Win Mag is a better buy for long range shooting at 1500 meters and under, and inside of 600 meters the 308 Win keeps up with the 300 Win Mag nicely.

Honestly even when i had a heavy barreled 300 Win Mag I never had anywhere long enough to stretch its legs over my 308s, so I sold it. One of these days I'll build another.

^^^^^ what he said... My favorite mid to large cal rifle by far, good enough for bear. Much more affordable too.

If you really want large game caliber at reasonable pricing, 416 is the caliber to get... 1500 USD will get you a fine example. Its also more readily available in the eu

Those hogs get big over there, twice as big as a lion and are hard to kill... 308 doesn't always cut it, it really is the best all rounder though.

IMO,if you are not going to shoot it suppressed it won't be fun to shoot! I shoot a Sako TRG 338 Lapua suppressed and it's like shooting a 22mag. Targets to 1200yds are no problem but it would be way overkill for a primary 200yrd gun. I also shoot 2 Sako 300win mags and they get the job done fine for me up to 6-700yds.

Sako has just come out with the long range hunter 338LM. Mine came in yesterday and I am setting it up to see how it does!;)

Make one. You can certainly do it for a lot less then what a factory rifle would cost.

I haven't made a 338 L. But I have made a 416 Rigby. The 338 L is based on the Rigby cased necked down.

I made my Rigby on a M1917 action. Its long enough and plenty strong enough.

There are a lot of bubba'ed 1917s out there. Some with the action unmodified or with the ears still on. Save those for restoring M1917s to as issued, they would be more valuable.

But the ones someone had grinded the ears off, cant be back in CMP Legal As issued M1917s.

You can find these rifles at gunshops, pawn shops etc fairly reasonable.

Find the barrel and stock to suit you. Chamber and headspace it, open the rails a bit, and open the bolt face to take the 338 L/Rigby case.

Really not that much of a job, and you have you a reasonable priced, long range rifle and if care is used it putting it together, its will be as, or more accurate then the expensive factory jobs.

KraigWY,

You have no idea how much Pond, James Pond, wishes that M1917 donor rifles were easily aquired in pawn shops in his neighborhood...

A P14 Enfield might be an easier find, although I have no idea how cross border firearms purchases actually work in the Eurozone.

I've handled the LR Hunter in .338LM.
Nice rifle- lightweight (9 lbs.), would be great for the intended purpose (hunting, natch)- but the barrel is a light contour and not as well suited for LR Target as other models.
