So which brands currently make .44Spl revolvers?

I mean specifically .44Spl.

I don't mean .44mags that, of course, take .44Spl.

Which brands, their models and the relative merits of those models.

For example, from what I have read Charter Arms make the bulldog which whilst light and easy to carry is not as robust as some other brands.

That is the stuff I'd like to know!

Ruger Blackhawks in both standard & Flattop models.
Colt (in batches, irregularly) in SAA & New Frontier.

The occasional Uberti SAA clone, when they do a relatively rare run.
Charter Arms in the Bulldog you mention.

Rugers are the strongest & most durable.
Colts are well made, have the history, but in general are not as strong or as durable over the long run as the Rugers.
The Ubertis are cheaper, with variable quality.
The Charter Arms products have shown variable quality over the years.

Selection is very slim

Too bad. It is accurate and capable of far more than factory loadings would suggest. Don't limit yourself to new firearms. I'd say snap up the fabled Rossi 720 if you can find one.

Uberti makes 'em in certain models if you like SA revolvers. In 44 Spl you also have the option of loading and shooting 44 Russian - but I imagine you wouldn't be interested in that as you remarked about 44 spl in 44 mag?

Available through Uberti, Cimmaron, Taylor, etc.

Best value on the market is a Ruger Blackhawk or Bisley. I've got a Bisley 5.5 and my next one is a Blackhawk 4.62. That's two for less than the price of a Colt.

For the same reason people like a .38 even though they could carry the same cartridges in a .357...

Basically, I like my Redhawk but it will never be used for anything but a woods gun and range boomer.
However, having fired .44Spls, I know that if there was anything to make me consider selling my little Astra .38, it would be the chance to have a carry gun in .44Spl....

I think you answered your own question.

For example, from what I have read Charter Arms make the bulldog which whilst light and easy to carry is not as robust as some other brands.

While the CA Bulldog might not be the iron clad tank a Ruger GP100 is, or as finely crafted a piece as a Smith and Wesson, the newer Bulldogs will stand up to as much 44 Spcl. as you will care to practice with. After all, you are talking a carry piece, not a range, and target gun.
BTW, the Charter Arms Bulldog Stainless is one of the three guns on the top of my short list for purchase this year.

Of those that interest me (DA defensive revolvers), Charter is the only one in current production that I am aware of. In the recent past, Taurus, and I think S&W had one.

Likewise, though if I run across a Taurus .44 Special I'd probably jump on that too. Something about .45 ACP ballistics in a defensive snubbie interests me...

A friend of mine had a Charter Arms Bulldog Pug.
If the loads weren't HEAVILY crimped, the bullets would back out of the cases from recoil. and bind the cylinder after 2-3 shots

Also, Rossi makes (or made) a 44 Spcl

I'll be a bad poster and ignore the currently available part of the original post...

I've had these Taurus guns for years and years...

Both 44 Specials, both extremely well made guns - from a time long, long ago.

I also understand that these would most likely NOT be available on the secondary market for the O/P

why would you specifically not want the 44.mag and shoot 44spl

They don't make 44 mag guns is a frame size like these.

Wish I could go back in time and get a Smith 24 or 624 when I had the chance. It's pretty much impossible now, considering I'm stuck here in California. :(

Ruger Blackhawks in both standard & Flattop models.
Actually the large frame is for .44Mag (yes it can shoot .44Spec, but...) . The medium frame Flattop is .44Spec only. There is also .44Spec New Vaqueros out there too (Sheriff or standard New Vaqueros). I also have the Bulldog for CC, but shoot my Rugers as they are a lot more fun.

The 69 is a very nice gun. But, with the 4.25" barrel it isn't really a ccw. It will be when they release a 2.5"

I like mine more as a hiking/trail gun.

If you also mean DA, then I think Charter Arms is the only one.
