So where are all the home defense shotguns?

I know gun sales have shot through the roof, but dang, Mossberg 590a1's are going for $1000+ on gunbroker.com. I'm assuming Mossberg, and other companies, are working at full capacity to address demand but even my favorite LGS doesn't have any home defense shotguns available, and they're usually well stocked on other firearms. They only have hunting/sporting shotguns for sale and while I understand that those, too, can be used for home defense, they're not my cup of tea. What about the Winchester SXP? Who else makes home defense shotguns with an 18" barrel?

Why do you assume they are working at full capacity? Some states still have lockdowns going on. Secondly, supply chains have been disrupted causing massive shortages of raw materials.

You can buy any pump gun from Mossberg or Remington and find an 18" barrel afterwards at most pawn shops.

Exactly. Mossberg and Magpul are understaffed. Mossberg especially. Their production line is hit hard. We'll see the end results in months to come.

Magpul is doing everything it can to accommodate for shifts and replenish out of stock items. But, then again, Magpul has it easier as far as manufacturing.

US has a steel import ban. I hope this doesn't get flagged because it relates to Trump because it's true...https://www.whitehouse.gov/presiden...adjusting-imports-steel-united-states-082920/

Mexico semi assembled Maverick 88s (Mossberg owned) are more available for this reason.

No. For 2 months I've looked for a mossberg 930 or 500 in 12ga. Simply do not exist. When they do, they go quick for 300 above normal worth. There is only one option for a 500 on gun.deals. It's a synthetic, 28"--the cheapest option for a 500 normally priced at $260. It is going for $500. Crazy.

Remington rifles were shut down for covid and Chapter 11.

You can find barrels, you can't find the actual 870 or 500 right now.

The contents of the link say nothing about a ban.

1. It's not a ban, it's a tariff.
2. It doesn't apply to all countries.
3. The U.S. steel supply is not in danger, the restriction was due, in fact, overproduction throughout the world which created a glut/plummeting prices.
4. Since the restrictions went into effect, domestic suppliers have increased production--in 2019, domestic steel production was the highest in over a decade.

All that aside, U.S. steel production, not surprisingly dropped in early 2020 and has been lower than usual since, although it has recovered significantly, starting in July.

True about lockdowns, but I figured since gun stores are considered essential that gun manufacturers would likewise be essential and running at full capacity.

Either way, I’m just gonna wait to get the 590a1

Although they are not the A1 model, I’ve seen several 590s #50778 go through the LGS, so they are available.

The SXPs seem harder to find around here. Not many shops carry Winchester regularly it seems. Cabela’s seems to have them (the base Defender model) available as order to store about every 3 weeks, but you have to check regularly and move quickly when they are available. In the SXP, though, I wanted a replaceable choke and just haven’t seen those in a 24” or less barrel length, much less 20” or less. The SXPs are also made in Turkey, so I am not sure how that supply chain is affected.

Two things:
I really wanted a stoeger m3000 and absolutely couldn’t get my hands on a short barreled model and when I called my local Smith he only wanted
$45 to cut the barrel and move the bead.

I coincidentally just found an 18.5 inch take off barrel from a mossberg/maverick 88 in a gun sock in my closet. It’s the one with the cap halfway down for the 5 shot mag tube so it’d go on a normal hunting mossberg. If one of you guys need it I’ll mail it to you for pretty cheap, like $70.

You would almost think there was unprecedented demand and a general fear of unpleasantness about. Nahhh couldn’t be that. ;)

You should define what you think a 'home defense shotgun' is. A shotgun with a 30" FC barrel will do keeping the zombies away just as well as an 18.5" cylinder choke.
"...going for $1000+..." Auction sites are like that. They cater primarily to the uneducated.
"...Hacksaw, file..." Pipe cutter, file, but only if there's no rib. snicker.

It's just not home defense shotguns, new pump shotguns in general are hard to find. Even some of the LGS are out of used ones.

My idea of a home defense shotgun would be a pump action with an 18.5" barrel. So, something that is ideal for close quarter combat or something that's easy to maneuver around corners with. I realize that any shotgun would do in a survival scenario but a longer barreled shotgun doesn't seem practical to me.

Pipe cutters should never be used to cut a shotgun barrel. They don't cut, they cleave. This results in constricted metal at the muzzle.

I was looking for a shotgun in early 2013 for HD. Many articles kept touting a pump shotgun so when you rack it, it supposedly scares away any perp. Logically, I would think it would just reveal your position, so I opted for a semi-auto. I had been looking for an FN SLP, but none were available in my town, so I noticed a Benelli M2 which was similar. The action was very smooth, as it should be, so I bought and have been very happy with it ever since. Of course it was expensive, but I believe in quality. After all, my life or family's lives may depend on it someday and I want to make sure it works. First of all, I was impressed with the ghost ring sights and found them accurate when I was shooting it out in the desert at 35 yards, which was more then sufficient for me. Installed a Tru Lock Crio Plus Tactical Breeching Choke Tube, not so much for breaking down any doors or impaling any zombies, but it just looks bad ass.

homes

Many of the SD shotguns bought and are now in homes. There's been a tremendous run on handguns and SD type firearms in general, I can't quote you the numbers, but its staggering. As certain areas in the country spun into chaos due to social unpleasantness/riot, many folks (rightly) decided they needed a firearm.

Fair weather rioters. Now that it's winter, notice all that craziness, for the most part, has stopped. Hard to riot......comfortably.....below freezing and a foot of snow on the ground.

Had to leave my 14" barrel back in Canada! 18.5 is OK. I picked up a Mossburg Ex 12 gage, from a Sheriff's Dept. For $87.00. Lots of misuse, but no wear internally.
Put a sticker on each side, SECURITY. On the plastic buttstock. Had it cut down to 18.5" Plus a new brass bead.
Used it on a security contract for two months. The first night I carried the Shotgun, no more hanger on's showed up. Glock 19 in the store, plus a shotgun outside, escorting the staff to their vehicles. That plus a vehicle escort, diamond delivery. We received a good fee for that duty. But no real call for it.
