So tell me about Ohio...

I'm a life-long resident of southwest Pennsylvania, and have no desire to leave - except maybe in retirement to a state with winters that are less severe. It would have to be a state that is as 2nd Amendment friendly as this one is.

Shall issue CCW, no fingerprints or mandatory training required, low cost (I think $20 or $50, or something along those lines). My county sends you a reminder a few months before it expires, & it's good for 5 years.

Numerous gun shows. No waiting period for purchases. No limit on purchases. No bans. Anti-laws are introduced, but as of yet none are ever passed.

Now, I know that Philadelphia isn't quite as friendly. No disrespect intended to any of the folks that live there - but Philly is more like NJ than the rest of PA.

But recently, my situation has changed. Within the next 18 months, if I want to keep my job I'll have to move 1 state to the west & become a resident of Ohio.

I know they have worked hard over there & now have a CCW law. But what about the cities & towns? Didn't Columbus just pass some kind of ban or anti-2nd Amendment law? Any other areas to watch out for? My business will be located just east of Cleveland, but from what I can see I'd probably want to be south of the city - if I decide to go.

 I hate this. I'm a Steeler season ticket holder. (The Browns? :barf: ) I've only a few years left to pay on my house. I only have to go out my back door & walk into the farm that borders my property to go shooting. I hate this.

ohio is mixed...cleveland is bigtime politically antigun..columbus did pass an assault ban but only within city limits, the new law is practically uninforcable anyhow as most of the people I know that live there simply choose to ignore it..farther down some of the other cities are also antigun.its a big political game depending on financial backing and who is running the show.best to check the ohio revised code for gun laws.some are absolutly ludicrus.

on the plus side, theres alot of good folks that worked hard to get the concealed bill through in spite of media and antigun politicians fighting against it..class 3 and other stuff is ok here with registration.there are good gun friendly folks here.

cleveland is the place Id watch.

Having lived in Ohio for my first 24 years, and now in Arizona...I'm a bit spoiled.

Look at Ohio's RINO governor and two Senators. Compare that to Penn's anti-gun governor, RINO Senator, and nearly RINO Senator.

Mixed bag. I'd stick with Penn, as long as I could stay away from Pitt and Philly.

Winters in Ohio are just as brutal in the north (lake effect), but somewhat more mild in the south.

Ohio is very flat in all but the SE portion of the state. Ohio deer is more yummy than Penn deer.

I'll agree about Swindell & Specter, but I'll hold out on Santorum. In any event my concern here is, selfishly, polictics on a local & state level. Except for that abomination out east, Pennyslvania is fairly pro 2nd Amendment & I don't know of any localities that have handgun or rifle bans. Swindell has behaved himself - so far - & while I believe there has been a 1 gun per month bill introduced into the state legislature I don't think it has much traction.

I think it's great that Ohio now has reclaimed the right to CCW, & I know there are a lot of great pro gun folks over there. I wouldn't want to unknowingly move into an area that won't allow my Bushmaster or SKS, or tell me a handgun is illegal.

First, learn all about the ohio car carry for ccw holders. Research of groups for ccw holders in ohio will show it is being worked on, but right now carry in a car sucks since you are concealing the gun when out of the car and expected to either expose the gun when in the car or lock it up when in the car. Only you reading up on it will teach you about it, I believe some stuff has gone to court about it but overall it is stupid to be expected to handle your gun or cover garment so much.

I am just about to find out if I get to move next month. I have lived in ohio all my life and the country areas are gun friendly while the cities and most burbs are anti-gun in laws. You will find gun friendly people here and there, but depending on what city you will be near you may find it pretty anti-gun.

Ohio has an income tax and a pretty big sales tax, I am heading to tennessee which has no state income tax and only a slightly higher sales tax. Depending on what county you are in your sales tax will vary in ohio so research that as well.

Overall most gun people can put up with ohio's current situation. I have looked at other states and compared things and while I will sometimes come to visit family I no longer wish to deal with ohio and all the taxes and laws and police departments that go with it.

Some searches on this site on the ohio police should turn up the fact we have our own highway patrol or whatever that tend to be annoying. I guess state highway patrol may be the words to search for.

If your job pays really well, you can stand ohio. However, I suspect after some research you will find ohio is not as good as some other states and if you are willing to move you can send a resume out to more gun friendly states and have at it.

One consideration depending on where you land in ohio would be if you are near the ar15 gun gatherings in the north of the state. Simply being near folks who are super duper gun nuts should keep most attention focused elsewhere.
