So Now I See What I've Been Missing

For all of my shooting career, with very little exception I've always been primarily a handgunner. This past week I made it to the big gun show at the state fairgrounds in Raleigh,N.C. I was there with every intention of scooping up a handgun...right up until I came across this GORGEOUS Remington 870 ! It's the Marine Magnum model [electroless nickel finish],black synthetic furniture, has the extended ammo tube,PLUS it came with a Side Saddle spare ammo carrier already installed. The gun was used, but close inspection revealed a pristine specimen inside and out. The price tag was $495.00; I did some talking and got it for cash,$500.00 even,no sales tax added. I continued to do some shopping at the show after buying it,and more than ten people walked up and tried to buy it from me ! NOW,I make it out to Wal Mart and see that a box of 25 rounds of birdshot is $5.97 !?!? Buckshot hardly costs any more ?! Man,have I been missing out...but we can consider that mistake officially rectified ! I'll post some pics as soon as I figure out how to do it. Now please excuse me..I have a new shotgun to go test ! :D

Hehehe... anuther one caught the bug!

Don't stop there- get a long barrel SG and start bustin some clays!

10-96: DON'T tempt me !! P.S. : Initial test just completed. No surprises, total reliability...wish I had tumbled onto this scattergun thing a lot sooner. Oh,well, more testing to follow ! Since I don't reload, there's no way I could buy a box of 25 rounds for any centerfire handgun I own for $5.97...now I have no excuse to not get in some range time at least once a month,if not more. Still...I grieve for all the wasted years ! :o

September is almost here! A case of shells, and a seat in the Dove field, it doesnt get much better than that!
Well, except for a gun full of buckshot, on the edge of the hardwood bottom, and the hounds are burnin the bottom up:D:D:D

And so it begins......

Be advised that while shotguns do not reproduce, they multiply like rabbits.

'Specially 870s.

You have been warned......

And after you get over the basic needs of pumps, the SxS and O/U bugs bite - and the quality ones start to rob your children of college educations..(it IS why they make student loans after all)

watch for sales at sporting goods stores. I have been boxes of 25 go on sale for as cheap at 2.99 online and 3.99 in store

Congrats! and welcome to the sickness..... It bit a few years ago and grew rapidly to 6 an overunder, pump, lever action, auto, single barrel breach,,,I'm still looking for a cool bolt.

Single Six,
Welcome to the light. Be assured, you're not the first member to come to the shotgun side from rifle and/or handguns forums. Your Marine Magnum is a great tactical gun and you'll get a lot of enjoyment training with it. Hopefully you had a chance to get well acquainted over the weekend.

I'm with 10-96… get out to a trap and skeet club and try some wing shooting with the clays. You'll soon find that the Marine Magnum, in its factory configuration, isn't the ideal wind shooter -- that's why they make longer spare barrels with vent ribs and target sights. A target barrel will also work well on highvel's doves.

You've probably noticed that shooting pistols and shotguns are vastly different. Where sight alignment, trigger pull and breath control make or break a hand gunner, they don't count for zilch when wing shooting. For a new wing shooter, the two most important items are to keep your head down on the stock and follow through. Also helping are proper positioning, a correct gun mount, a smooth swing, and seeing the correct lead.
… wish I had stumbled onto scattergun thing a lot sooner
I feel the same, but from a different perspective: I was hooked on shotguns, and specifically Skeet with the first round I shot 45+ years ago. But, I never took full advantage of the opportunities available and did little more than shoot holes in the sky for more than 20-years. I was self-taught and learning by trial and error (lots of errors). It wasn't that until I started shooting at a club with several All-American and World Champion shooters as members that I started to really learn about shotgunning. The bottom line: if you really want to be shotgunner, take some lessons and buddy-up with someone who is a much better shooter.

Welcome to the addiction, I have but one shotgun but I am in the process of finding a remedy for that.

I got into shotguns when a buddy of mine took me out to blast some clays in college a few years back, and it's been downhill ever since.

Clays, Geese, Ducks, Upland, and old grain bins full of Pigeons are truly addictive. I think no gun nut should be without a minimum of ten shotguns. Short barreled "defense" guns, pumps, o/u, sxs, semi auto goose crushers, old west coach guns, you name it.

Pick up a Benelli Vinci and handle it next time you get to the gun shop and tell me you dont fall in love.

I got rid of my Marlin 1894SS in order to get the 870;contrary to what I'd always heard,it was not very reliable. Not so with the Remington. I'm VERY happy with it ! Guys, thanks as always for all the positive feedback.
