So it begins.

Crap. I just have one very stupid question, if we buy them before they ban them, can/would they force us to turn them in or would we get to keep them (a.k.a. pre-ban work still?) Sorry for my ignorance, Im still learning.

Time to pony up and get that AR before the "evil guns" get the dems panties in a bunch again huh?

ALSO....how much time do we have before this bill is president approved and LAW? I need to know how much time I have to save! One month, two, six?
Thanks,

--Luke

When I saw that the Democrats were likely going to retake control of the House and Senate I immediately began saving and preparing to buy more guns and specifically those guns likely to be banned first, military type guns and guns with high capacity magazines. My next step is to start stockpiling ammunition. Would also like to buy a backup, maybe a SOCOM 16.

As the saying goes
“God blesses the child that has his own.”

And quite frankly I think it only prudent to not have a paper trail that leads back to you though I know that in some states that isn’t very easy.

You think going down to your local gun store buying a semi-auto is going help stop this. I can`t believe you guys. A few days ago I posted a link to fight this bill. Why don`t write or call your Rep. No wonder we have 20,000 gun laws on the books. A gun ban comes up, and all you guys think of is to run to the gun store. Why don`t you fight for keeping them legal rather than owning something that is banned and you can not use.
Unbelievable mentality.

Oh, for Pete's sake. You might want to start reading something a little more substantive and less biased than that ad campaign. I would suggest starting with the US Constitution (including the parts other than the 2nd Amendment) and a reputable and reliable news source.

Any wack-job on the Hill can introduce legislation. Daniel Moniyhan (sp?) from New York introdeced legislation every session when he was in office to put a 10,000% tax on ammunition; an $8 box of ammo would have had a tax of $800. It obviously never went anywhere. Getting legislation introduced is easy - getting it on the president's desk and signed into law is another matter altogether. Have you looked at the numbers in the house and senate recently? Even though the democrats have power, they are a fractured party on the gun issue; many of the newly elected dems are blue dogs. Moreover, Pelosi knows it would be political suicide for the democratic party in 2008 to push much anti-gun legislation now. They well remember the lessons of 1994 and don't want to risk another 12 years in the minority. All bets are off after the '08 elections though...

Look, im just worried about clintons ban on "assault" weapons coming back again. Maybe permanently this time. They did it before they'll do it again. And what might I ask is the point of fighting these things if the dems are the majority and the few republicans in there are going to go along with whatever the other party says? Shrub has made it clear that he will sign another "it looks scary so you cant have it" bill the second it touches his desk. I agree im pretty ignorant as far as these things are concerned so yeah, this is how I see it at the moment. If you want to try and educate my un-educated self then do it without being a condisending asshat! Im sick of seeing people like myself being treated with such attitudes as the ones already in this thread. Sorry we cant all listen to the E.I.B. network or watch fox news 24/7 like you obviously do.

You can thank Newt " I wont let any anti-gun bills pass in Congress" Gingrich for the Lautenberg Amendment. He was a Republican and it happened under his watch. Bush said if you renew the assualt weapons ban I will renew it. Bill Richardson voted for that same ban as part of a crime bill in 1994.

So who can you trust?

only yourselves....If a politician thinks he can take an inch and get away with it he is going to....If enough of you let them know they could lose their job like in 1994 the Dem leadership will pay the bills lip service but see they die in the twilight zone of Congress.

I agree im pretty ignorant as far as these things are concerned so yeah, this is how I see it at the moment.
Suggestion:
The answer is to read more and post less on threads where you admit ignorance. Nobody really cares how you (or I) "see it at the moment". This is not a frat party; it's an informational web site. You're participation is more than welcome, but temper it with reasoned and educated positions.

If you're ignorant on a subject, here's the cure-all: Ask intelligent questions. Read the answers.

Back on topic:
Personally, I'm with Shaggy. This Bill bears watching, but it hardly rates a title "So It Begins"; more appropriate would be, "New Day. Same as Yesterday".

"I just have one very stupid question, if we buy them before they ban them, can/would they force us to turn them in or would we get to keep them"

There's no way to know, Luke. But here's what Senator Dianne Feinstein had to say on the matter in 1994:

"If I could have gotten 51 votes in the Senate of the United States for an outright ban, picking up every one of them, Mr. and Mrs. America, turn them all in, I would have done it."

Shrub has made it clear that he will sign another "it looks scary so you cant have it" bill the second it touches his desk.

True, but think about when and why he made that statement. He was looking at getting elected and trying to play to the middle ground. Now he's a lame duck, so there's no one to hold him accountable for breaking that promise should he decide to veto it. And now, with a democrat congress thats not going to cooperate with him on many issues, and a republican party in serious trouble for straying from their base, there is no compelling reason to keep a promise that will further hurt the republican base and help the democrats.

And once again, for such a bill to even make it to the Oval Office, you have to completely ignore the huge problem the democrat's have of risking the '08 elections on the single issue of gun control.

Touche.
Maybe I should have named it "so it re-commences";)

Fixboot>I just have one very stupid question, if we buy them before
Fixboot>they ban them, can/would they force us to turn them in...

In Canada, if a politician is watching a movie and they show an "evil black assault baby-killing rifle" it's added to the prohibited list. Gone from all the stores. Then they look up the current owners on their 2 billion+ dollar registry, show up in force, and take it from you. No compensation.

I assume it will be the same in the U.S., except it will be Hillary and Rosie O'Donnel at your door chortling on how they put you in your place. Only celebrities and politicians are supposed to have guns and armed guards. It's for your own good. They know what's best for you.

The point is, is they are public servants. Whether they are the majority or not, the peoples votes determines the outcome of this bill.

Keep reading posts here, and may I suggest you join the NRA, or GOA, or other pro-gun organization. I see that you like like guns and you are concerned about keeping them, then you owe it to yourself to get informed about anti-gun legislation and in my view that means being politically active. Do it for freedom.:)

I read a few more threads in this legal section and I think I understand a little more now than I did at 7am! Now to search for a source of news that ISNT my local stations. Any balanced fact based news around the www?

At the risk of sounding complacent, gun control is significantly less of an issue for the Democrats now than it was ten to fourteen years ago. Even if they manage to get some bills, such as this one, through the House, it's by no means a given that they'll get through the Senate. Plus, there's always the presidential veto...

By the way, fixboot, you do know that pic of Daschle is a Photoshop job, right? (Hint: mens' jackets button left over right.)
