So, How Does the Media's Reputation Fare in this Debacle?

Curious as to your opinions regarding the long term effects upon the mainstream media's reputations in this election debacle.

Certainly, most of the criticism will probably be directed towards obsolete voting systems. However, I have to admit, I'm not sanguine about using computer to vote. Considering the efforts by some to defraud the system, I don't think I'd like to wonder whether DemocRat hackers could tilt the count.

But, the media should certainly pay a price in credibility for this mess. Their irresponsible 'calling' of states, and then later to reverse the call, or to at least report a very, very close call seems more than just chance. I understand they all get their data from one source, but it seems that 'source' is more like a sister entity than some truly independent source. For example, as I understand it, the AP is sort of a consortium of major media companies.

Will CNN, NBC, etc. pay a price in credibility? Have they damaged their 'goods'?

They had credibility to start with?

Oh, I thought you meant with me. You really meant with average idiots who can't interpret a straigtforward ballot.

It doesn't matter if those idiots loose faith in the RIMM (Reality Impaired Mass Media). They'll just continue to get their news from National Enquirer or from Jerry Springer, or someone else on a par with Dan Blather.

A few more percent have now discovered that the media (CNN, et al) are not all that they crack themselves up to be.

Notice they only jokingly refer to the Tuesday night mess without offering any real analysis.

NBC News runs a radio commercial around here in which Brokaw crows to swelling music, "We can make a difference!" Dammit, I don't want them to make a difference, just to deliver a fair and accurate summary of the news. Way too much to ask, I guess.

There has to be a way to reduce the impact of these pompous clowns on our elections. One thing that might help would be a 24-hour voting period, all absentee ballots have to be received by the end of it, no counts reported until it's over, results released all at once in alphabetical order of states. The media could still do exit polling, but that is becoming increasingly worthless, as we saw, due to the increase in early & absentee voting.

Beneath contempt. I'd go so far as to say treasonous, treacherous and anti-American

I hear that there are going to be hearings on all the networks regarding the early calls to Gore states on Monday! :D

I think MrBigglesworth gets it :D.

How will the media fare? Just fine like always. Will they pay a price? No, they never do. Will their credibility be damaged? They will always find a way to make damaged credibility work in their favor... they are the Media.

If disgust with the media ever reaches a majority consensus in this country, the disgust itself will become the top news story of the moment. Dan Rather will include in each broadcast the "media distrust stats of the day". CNN will probably dedicate 12 hours a night to the subject. 60 Minutes will go "undercover" to investigate the shoddy reporting that the networks do and Dateline will run stories exposing (including their own) deliberately exaggerated "investigative reporting." Hannity and Colmes (and celebrity guest) will debate the issue for an hour every night and Bill O'Riley will have enough "Talking Points" to last him a year. As we all gleefully tune in to watch their "demise", ratings will remain strong and advertising revenues will continue to grow. The American people will never realize that they've been duped again and the story will eventually fade away just like the little Cuban kid.

I've spent a good portion of my life working within the media. I apologise if I sound like I’m ranting but trust me, hostile viewers are just as good to have as friendly ones. Just so long as you can keep them watching... :(

Jeff- you know the old saying, "figgurs don't lie, but liars do figgur!"?
TV network news has been losing market share for years, and the biased, mendacious, sanctimonious SOB's still can't figure it out! H*ll! Even the comedies & cartoon shows have left-wing, PC-type bias!
As Fox news steals away more viewers ( i.e., money ) and more people bypass the TV/papers/magazines entirely via the Web, look for them to shift right-- nominally, of course-- or die off...
Have you looked at this map? http://www.freerepublic.com/forum/a3a0b0b2a292a.htm
It is-- telling? Or devastating? Shows the Real America ( AKA flyover country... ) vs. the DC, LA, and NYC "media Axis."

Here's something to encourage everyone:
Yesterday I had some kids in my room making up some work after school (much more informal setting) and a lot of them were railing on about how much they hated the media and how bias they were. Maybe there's hope after all. :)

AAD-- I think you're right about "the kids..."
My 2 nieces can't tolerate ( the Nameless One... da prez...)-- they view him as a bad cartoon character! They are 16 & 18, and properly skeptical of the news, and authority... thank God!

To try to save their own skins, the media may start to turn on Gore; there are some signs that it's already happening. They will devour their young in a heartbeat if they think they need to. They are in some trouble over this, and may find it in their interest to suddenly stop being agitators and become "statesmanlike", supremely interested in what is best for the nation, with much intoning and mournful looks into the camera. Hold your nose and watch it happen.

Jeff,

The call for Florida probably influenced enough voters so that Gore carried the popular vote. Many Bush backers in all but the Eastern Time Zones either left the polls or did not show up once they "learned" the Gore had won Florida. It's interesting to note that the networks reversed themselves only after all the polls closed at around 9:30 p.m. I think the whole shameful scenario was set up to help Gore win.

Will this debacle harm the media? I think ever-increasing numbers of people will continue to be turned off network news, and as more options (cable news shows, internet, talk radio, etc.) continue to be available, will switch. Whether it will happen quickly, or in time, I don't know.

Saw Bill Bennett comment on the media's behavior the other day.
He called it Media Malpractice.
Too bad we can't sue them!

Bestdefense357,
You made an important point about how the media going "Gorey" early influences the vote. How might the sheeple in the western states who were on the border like be influenced if they see one person winning early in the east? Everybody loves a winner, right?
