So finally held my first handguns.

So my grandfather has been having groundhog problems alot as of late. His garden has been invaded. And well, you know how those OLD school Italians are, lol always have to have the garden. Anyways last time I saw him my father gave him 5 rounds of 12 gauge 5 shot. I asked where he got the ammo from (the Winchester Super X looked VERY familiar to me) he said he got them from my room DOH! I wasnt mad that he gave them to my grandpa but that he didnt ask, its the principal of it! Anyways my grandfather is 86 years old and its hard for him to use the 12 gauge anymore. So I was looking for some .410 ammo today. I called around and found Miller's Guns Center on the google map. Called up and asked if they had .410 ammo, they said yes.

I finally found a good Gun Shop in DE! I went in, from the very start I really would like to say these guys were good people. Asked if we need help, recommended products, awnsered every question with enthusiasm and were easy to have a long fun conversation with. I looked around and saw used guns and pointed them out to my dad. I insisted he get a gun of some sort for protection as he has been robbed before in a parking lot and since I care so much I talked him into looking for a personal protection piece. They had all sorts of guns, my God I have never seen so many guns at once before, and they were amply supplied with every type of ammo from A-Z. My father held several guns allowing me to hold them too.

We held snubbys to 4" barrels. They were pushing him to get a .357, I was pushing for a .38 and my dad wanted a .22 magnum. We held Taurus, Smiths, and Rugers. All were excellent guns. I WANTED THE S&W 642. Then I asked about the gun I really wanted, the S&W 638. The gun shop owner laughed because he loves that gun too, he carries one at all times. He can get me anything I want shipped to him in 3 days flat for free! I held all the guns and loved the 2 finger gripped snubbies best which is funny cuz I got big hands. Another guy that is a regular their told me to go with a Ruger GP-100.

While these are good guns any many swear by it I remembered what many of you fellow forumers told me. To stick with what I liked, what I was comfortable with. So far I really gotta say I'm loving those S&W snubbys! I will be getting either the 638 or 642. Wasnt crazy for the semi-autos. I hated the feel to them. Sorry to all you fans out their Im not hate'n or nothing. But they just arent my thing. So my father and I discussed it and he will be getting his .22 magnum (against my discretion for a bigger better gun), and I will be going with him to pick up my snubby come my BDAY on Nov 26! CANT WAIT, thanks for all your help guys, all of you. I appreciate all the wisdom you have given me and just wanted to give an update.:D

BIG TOM!

GUNS ... are the sickness... you cant escape them..they will surround you... pin you down,,they can track you anywhere in the world...they...will find you.

Not to say, 'told you so'...BUT.... 'told you so.'
I KNEW YOU'D LIKE THE J-FRAMES!
:D

Also, I'm glad you stopped all the .22 for self-defense nonsense.

What did your dad get?

He didn't.

Batter gun, or better caliber? I know what your saying.

I have a 638 and just love it for shooting at the range, and for SD carry. I really like the option to shoot single action as an option unlike the 642 at no extra charge. I shoot mainly DA, but sometimes it's so fun to bring the target out to 25 or 50 yards and see how I can shoot DA and SA. That freedom baby, and there is no different for pocket carry.

Well he did go bigger, he's not getting a revolver. We checked out guns and his price range and what he feels a gun is worth to him. Honestly he is WAY more picky than I am. He said I shouldn't get a .38 snubby because I will hate the recoil to it. He finally saw that semi autos are not so bad once you get used to them and is getting a Bersa .380 thunder. I may follow as he can buy 2 and give me one. Then around Xmas I will go for a snubby.

Sounds like you had a good time, there's nothing like a trip to the gunshop!
I'm a big fan of snubbies too but I would really recommend shooting before buying if possible especially if its your first gun.

P.S. I don't care for the autos either. Except the 1911, now that's a fine semi!
