Snubbies to the Rescue on TV

I am a great fan of the J frame.

Last night I watched Arrow that I had recorded. This is version of Green Arrow from the comics. In it, the good guy - Arrow, an old lover (Black Canary) and her dad (a cop) are fighting a bunch of super ninja types. The show has great fight scenes and the main protagonists use bows, bos, staves, etc. They regard guns as dishonorable. Since they are mildly superhuman they can hold their own against guns. Arrow shot a grenade out of the air after it was fired at him from a few feet. Rather quick.

Anyway, Dad is getting the crap kicked out of him by a ninja who disarms his duty semi. Tells Dad that guns are dishonorable and how about dat? Dad on the ground pulls out what looked like a SW 640 from an ankle and just shoots him. It brought a smile to my face!

It ranked in there with a vampire movie where Robert Loggia was seduced and then bitten by a beautiful vamp. When he realized that (they were on a couch) he pulled a 442 from an ankle and shot her off him.

Take away point - in superhero / vamp universes - J frames are still viable!

Also Arrow's buddy (ex military) uses a wicked Glock. Ah - my carry combos - J and Glock. :D

"Guns are a cowards weapon, what are you without your sidearm?" -Ninja

"A guy with a spare" Lance says as he draws from an ankle holster and drops the guy.

I thought that scene was pretty cool.

Have you noticed the slight anti gun overtones in the episode before that? The gun buyback program everyone was excited about and Oliver saying he never touches guns made me pause.

I remember an episode of the Buffy spinoff show "Angel" where one of the main characters grabs what looked like a .44 special charter arms revolver from behind a desk and shot at one of the main villains.

Seems like certain TV shows treat gun use as something for desperate circumstances; a not unreasonable view. But watching that show in particular I always thought to myself when they were fighting all these big monsters and such: "where are the Guns?" They know they have to go kill a giant demon beast and they bring a crossbow and some swords? How about a .375 double rifle instead?

Another of the characters uses alternatively a Mossberg 500 cruiser model, an English stocked double barreled shotgun; or a pair of 1911's. But nothing he shoots is hardly ever effected by the bullets. It's preposterous actually; I remember an episode where he loosed 14 rounds (holding both pistols a the same time) at a monster and the bullets just bounced off. What??

I'm surprised to here that guns were involved in anything to do with comics; they seem to take a dim view of firearms overall.

I remember that - Arrow did have a gun buy back program but you can't be so purist that you can't watch something.

DC comics don't like killing folks that much. Oh, well.

I'll still watch the show, the buyback just annoyed me a little. I liked it better when the arrow shot people though.

What kind of gun did the detective pull? I only caught a quick glimpse, could it have been an LCR?

I watched that episode..

I didn't know 'Arrow' was even on television until I found it accidentally. But I am an old Green Arrow fan, and rather like Black Canary.

The revolver in question was a small double action revolver. I immediately thought "Chief Special" but that's probably more due to my background than my eyesight. It could well have been one of the small dark colored revolvers made by Ruger. (I'm pretty sure it wasn't stainless or nickle.)

Just for the official Tally-book: The evil minions are NOT ninjas. They are Arabic speaking 'assassins' alluding to the historical 'assassins' operated by 'The Old Man of the Mountain'. Oddly, the title or label of 'assassin' comes from the Arabic word for cannabis, from which we get the word 'hashish'. It seems one common practice was to get wound up on hashish prior to commencing the attack. (Tastefully not covered in this story line.)

I thought Speedy had changed quite a bit...

I think the gun was a 640 with the longer snubby barrel. But that's a guess.

Speedy is some kid going out with Ollie's sister.

Ollie's main male buddy is a big guy named Digges who is a special forces vet. Uses a Glock. While a tough guy he is not up to the superhuman standards of Ollie and the associated BGs who trained in some superduper stuff.

He is training with Ollie and may come up to speed. He isn't afraid to use the Glock.

I would like to have Ollie's H2H skills if I were to open carry (ducking for cover).

I recently bought a Smith 37 which the gun shop owner told me was an ankle gun for a retired local cop. Perhaps it was one of those the detective carried. They're very lightweight and feasible for ankle carry.

Bad guys catching arrows in mid-air? Possible but extremely unlikely under the circumstances, maybe impossible depending on Ollies bow speed.

Dodging bullets? That's when I woke up and remembered I was watching Hollywood...

Personally I wish Castle, in the show by the same name, would carry a S&W 66 2 1/2 combat magnum.

I mean he IS a millionaire, buddy with the NY Mayor, and has saved the world a few times on the show.

And he can shoot.

SPOILER; The Highhwayman....

I like the clever twist at the end of the action thriller; The Highwayman.

A under appreciated traffic accident investigator in a highway patrol blows away a brutal serial killer who uses cars to kill his victims.
The angry wounded killer says; WHO ARE YOU???
Im Sgt Tom Johnson, HIGHWAY PATROL, then fires his 12ga pump.:D
