snubbie

I'm on my way to a gun show today. I'd like to pick up a small .38, like the Colt detective special. Any suggestions or recommendations? What to avoid?

Colt's are good, S&W are good, though I wouldn't buy a new one from them. I had a S&W model 36 and I liked it, except that it was a bit on the heavy side. Frankly I would take a good look at the newer Taurus ultra lights, or the titanium guns. I don't see any reason to move up from the 38 special in a snub nose when you are looking at the titanium, though it's now an option. These guns will digest pratically an unlimited ammount of +P ammunition due to the strength of the titanium and their light weight makes them a joy to carry.

Thanks! I'm off to the show, with cash in my pocket and lust for a new gun or two in my heart.

the mdl 60 is one i like,,,,,,they also have one in 9mm but you'll have to find that used........fubsy.

I'm with the Captain, Jay, and Fus the S&W
model 60 in .38 Special is a real bell ringer. It served well tucked into a ruck
sack in Southeast Asia, back in the late
60's and early 70's111 :D

I didn't see anything I couldn't live without, but I think there's a show in Tulsa April 29-30th, so keep the suggestions coming.

Go for the Ruger SP 101. It may no have the smooth trigger of the S&W but it is by far the toughest Snub-nose available today.

Please take a look at the Taurus M605 .357MAG. Good carry revolver. Good service, if needed. Effective caliber. Nuf said.

The model 60 and SP101 are too heavy for pocket carry IMO. The aluminum-framed J-frames like the 642, Taurus 85UL are much easier to carry. The titanium guns are even lighter yet.

I just bought a Taurus 85UL. After a trigger job it is just as smooth as my fifty-year model 36 and several ounces lighter. It is rated for +P too.

I carry a Charter Arms Undercover daily. It is lightweight and accurate.

16X100 out of 20rds (1 center-mass and 3 head shot ten-rings) CCW. Firing most double-action.

I've fired a very limited number of
+P+'s with no ill effect to the firearm, my hand is another story!!!

Just my .02cts.

S&w 637

Just picked one up a week ago..... Put a good dose of regular 38 and +P through it. I am very happy with it's size, weight, feel, and carrys concealed like a dream. This is to date the best concealed revolver I have had my hands on. The price is real good too. I think it weights about 15oz. empty. I did add a little bigger Uncle Mikes full wrap rubber grip (with 3rd finger spot) to mine. It made a super better hold for me. I love this new gun. If you get a minute look at S&W web page. I think this might be worth a chance in your hands to see what you think.

Good luck........

Sorry I just now noticed the date on original................. I am sending myself to my room for one hour......and no tv..... :(

RoJoe: Post a pic! I'd like to see that Uncle Mike's grip. Also, do you wish you had gotten a Model 642 (same model, but hammerless) instead?

I have a Smith 342 and a Taurus 651 357.
Both are fine guns, the 342 is alloy/titanium and runs $500+.
The Taurus is blued steel and runs about $250.

I have owned Colt Cobras, the alloy framed version of the Detective Special, and they are a very fine gun.

It is my opinion, but stay away from Charter Arms, aka Charter 2000.
Some will tell you to be cautions of Taurus also, I agree, but I still own Taurus products.

Only one of my seven revolvers isn't a snubby and that one is a Smith 58.

I have a few snubnosed revolvers. Although some people think it may be peculiar/homely looking, I believe this is my favorite:
