hey guys, i was recently looking at 9mm autos, then kinda had a change in heart, curious if any of you can suggest a good strong reliable 38/357 snubbie, for a smaller shooter, and either in stainless or something rust resistant, thanks for your time guys.

The best are from S&W, although Ruger's SP-101 is an excellent revolver.

S&W offer a good number of revolvers based on their small "J" frame, and on the medium "K" frame.

Ruger offers the SP-101 in 2" to 3" barrels and in .38 or .357, and offer 2 3/4 version of their medium frame GP-100.

Although I consider them a definite step down even from the Ruger, Taurus offer a wide variety of small and medium framed revolvers.

What Dfaris said. I'll also add that either the SP 101 or S&W 60/640/649 would make excellent choices in a 357 capable, all stainless revolver!

FWIW, I have a Sp 101 in 9mm. ( Now discontinued) Cool gun!

You might want to look at the Taurus 605, Shorty. Small frame, 5-shot in stainless steel, and relatively inexpensive. I have one. Shoots fine, but put some Pachmayr compact grips on it if you shoot .357s in it.

Second on the Taurus

If you get a CH85 the grips are pretty small and easy to conceal in your pocket

+1 on the 605. I changed out the factory boot grips with factory combat grips. they were about $12. You can shoot 357's, but it's more comfy with
38+p. Nice weapon. :)

Snubnose recomendation

Here are some facts to deal with:
[1] The heavier the gun the easier it is to control
[2] The bigger the gun the harder it is to CCW
[3] The bigger the grips the better control you have but harder to conceal.
You need to figure out if the gun will be a SHOOTING GUN or a CARRY GUN.
If a carry gun any "K" or "L" frame will do. If a shooter a Ruger GP-100 or SP-101 are strong enough to carry and shoot.

I have to agree with the 605...I know alot of people don't like Taurus, but it's servicable and has never given me any problems. I had the hammer bobbed, and carry it it daily. It shoots well, and conceals easily, not a bad choice.

605 Snubby

Hi Shotty,

I have an active dislike of Taurus autos, but took a chance on the 605 revolver. It's surprisingly accurate for a 2 inch barrel. It's heavy enough, at 24 ounces, that .357s are not too unpleasant through it, though the fireball is impressive. My eyes are old and didn't pick up the steel rear and front sights so well, so I painted the rear white and the front day glo orange. That helped quite a bit. I also just installed Crimson Trace grips. Haven't tried them yet, but I'll report.
I was very impressed with the DA/SA trigger on ours. It's about the smoothest revolver trigger I've tried.

M605 is my carry gun!!

Actually it's my second one.
The first was sold to buy a gun for my wife.
As soon as I was able, I got another!!
Mine has a smooth trigger, is accurate, and is heavy enough to handle the recoil of full house magnum loads without breaking my hand!!

Second the motion on the SP-101 or the Taurus 605. Liked the looks of the 101. Durable and over-built. Can't go wrong there. I just didn't care for the small grips on it.

I carry the Taurus 605. Great gun. It's excellent with 38's for practice and a rocket with factory 357's.

There are a few things to keep in mind with a 2in barrel. The barrel, as well as the sights are merely a decoration. And whatever you do, DON'T HAVE IT PORTED! That was the only mistake I made with mine.

You might also want to give some thought to a larger cal.Rossi mod 770 in 44 spec fits perfectly in k frame holster, alot more punch(although one less round), and mine still shoots poa after several hundred rounds.

Any of the S&W pre-lock J frames, Models 60, 649, & 38, are my favorites.
If you want .357, go for a model 60-9 or up. Be sure to hang on to it!

Taurus 605 & Crimson Trace

Hi Shotty,

I promised to report on the Crimson Trace grips with the 605.
Winner!
I was teaching some new folks to shoot and the laser was really helpful to demonstrate trigger contol.
The grips are somewhat smaller and harder than the stock grips, but were not at all uncomfortable.
I had calibrated the grips at home and then forgot the adjustment toolwhen we went to the range. It was exactly right horizontally, but shot about 3 inches high to point of aim. My wife and I were pleased and the new shooters got a lot of valuable feedback from them. I'm quite happy with the 605 and more so with the addition of the Crimson Trace grips.

Geez all this 605 talk...

I've had one for a few years. It has spent most of the last year waiting to be traded off... May I'll give it another whirl.

+1 for S&W Model 60

I have a S&W pre-lock Model 60-7LS in .38sp.

Built strong, utterly reliable, easy to carry, surprisingly accurate.

I carry this gun frequently and would trust my life with it.
