Snub .38 Non +P Defense Loads

I was thinking about getting a used S&W Mod 60 (maybe 15 -20 years old). But are there any decent to acceptable non +P rounds for a 2" barrel?

I know its okay to shoot +P occasionally but I like to practice with something close to what I would use in defense. Is there a good combination of regular fmj range loads and jhp loads that would be close in terms of feel?

I am not sure what you consider decent to acceptable, but, my Model 37 Airweight gets a steady diet of winchester silvertips, but I have been contemplating moving to 110gr hydra-shoks. I shoot what I carry, so no +P rounds in my little guy.

Yeah, "decent to acceptable" is pretty hard to quantify when we're talking snub nose .38's. I guess any jhp or heavy swc would be better than any fmj rounds.

For 38 Special I would recommend the 158 grain lead semi-wadcutter hollowpoint. Jacketed bullets are generally unneccessary at low velocity. For general practice any 158 grain lead bullet will do fine.

I will second the all lead semi-wadcutter HP. I believe this load has the best record for stadard pressure .38 Special in any barrel length tested. This is the ammo my 74 year old mother keeps in her 5" M10 in the nightstand.
