Sniper rifle??

The scope doesn't make the gun anymore accurate, you just have to be a better shot.

When I was little my dad wouldn't put a scope on my .22. He said he wanted me to learn to shoot steady and accurately all the time. Scopes are a frill. They aren't needed, and you will become a better shot by practicing at longer ranges with iron sights. Then when you put a scope on you're gun, even a 4X32, let alone a 6X, you will be amazed how well you can shoot.

A good friend and former SBS Marine has a very nice Brit rifle with a 6X scope on it, Schmidt-Bender I think, maybe Swarovski.
He also owns Tac-Pro shooting Center, complete with 1000 yard range. He's able to hit any target within range of the elevation adjustments of the scope, about 800 yards without holdover. I use a 10x at 1000 yards, and have used my Nightforce at that range on the low setting of 5.5x without difficulty.
It's all cartridge, projectile, and elevation.

BadMedicine and Michael answered it pretty much the same as I would.

If you can't hit with iron sights, a scope is not going to help much. In fact, some guru, maybe Jeff Cooper, I can't remember, said a scope extends your effective hitting range about 35 yards. Not much eh? Don't know if I believe that or not.

My Dragunov has a 4X PSO1 Scope and I never heard anybody say it was under powered. It is calibrated to 1300 Meters. I don't think people really understand riflery anymore. Davy Crockett, Daniel Boone, and Alvin York never had scopes, yet they were legendary marksmen. Why do we expect less of ourselves?

Just asking... :)

Don't forget - Hunter Benchrest rifles are limited to 6x scopes for competitition... Remember that when you add power, you're also increasing mirage, etc...

In chorus here.
Consider the story of how L.H. Oswald purportedly assinated JFK, with a WWII surplus Mannlicher-Carcano, with what, a small POS scope on it.

I have a very fine genuine German sniper rifle, built for purpose, with an S&B 1.5-6X42 scope on it.
Obviolusly an "urban configuration", and as such, should be well defined within the 100 yard limit of that usage.
I know that this rifle would be capable of 800-1000++ yd shots, if'n the proper scope (read higher power) were on it. Since it wasn't manufactured with iron sights on it.

6 power is excellent. You get some magnification and still have decent field of view. The advantage of scopes is that you have one optical plane, instead of three with irons. 4-6 power was de rigur for snipers up until the US introduced 8x and 10x Unertls, 10x Leupolds, and 3-9 ARTS and Redfields. Everydamnbody has this fetish with high mag, and it's counterproductive. You get a tiny field of view, mirage is a pain, and your wobble nearly makes you seasick. But everybody has to have a bigger scope! I saw some dumb*** in the woods when I was hunting in NC a couple years back with an HK91, with some huge 56mm obj variable scope on it. I was laughing so hard I ruined my hunting for the next couple hours. And me with my 44Mag Super Blackhawk, and irons, got me a nice little swamp deer. I have a number of large scopes(nothing bigger than 24x though) and they are all for varmint or target shooting. Biggest practical scope I use for hunting is my 4.5-14 Lepold with the 50mm obj and 30mm tube, and honestly this is pretty big, and I don't think it gives me any real advantage. Semper Fi...Ken

I'm very keen on the idea, especially if the objective lens is relatively large, and is multi-coated for better-than-average light-gathering capability. This massivily increases resolution, which is more important than magnification, anyway.

BUT, for all my contribution to this thread, I'm STILL going to move it to "The Art of the Rifle" forum, where it rightfully belongs. So hang on... here we go to THAT forum.....
