The snake charmer .410 g with scabbard looks like a pretty neat and light backpacking gun. How effective would it be for protection against people / cougars / bears? I know .410 is small, but would a .410 slug be effective? Thanks...

Don't know about the target choices there, but shot placement is the key to neutralizing a threat.

I have a derringer in .45/.410, and I usually keep a .410 slug in it. Otherwise, I keep a .410 shell in 000 in the chamber. Yes, 000. You'll get three of those pellets in that shotshell. If you can find a five-round box, it'll cost you around five bucks. Neat round, that.

The ballistics of the 410 slug have always baffled me. It goes fast, something like 1500FPS, but it weighs next to nothing. If I remember right, it's only one fifth of an ounce. A whopping 87 grains. Considering the limited penetration such a button shaped slug would have, the question is what was the thing designed for? I would stick with the buckshot that J.G.H.G. refered to.

Might just piss 'em off...I'd learn how to reload that single shot REAL darned fast!

The 410 slug, I'm told, packs about the same energy as a 38 Special, standard velocity 158 gr SWC.I wouldn't care to have to count on absolutely perfect placement when dealing with large predators.

I wouldn't want to face a bear or cougar with a single shot of anything under the power of 30-06. Better off with a repeater of some sort. Or get it and also carry a .44 for bears and cougars.

I tend toward the notion that it would make an animal mad, more than dead. Better hope that the noise scares them away.

A Snake Charmer is good for snakes with birdshot; maybeso a rabid dog or coyote or suchlike, with the buckshot.

And this is going to Shottyguns.
