Smtihing the SPS

Can fluting be done to a medium heavy barrel, or is it cheaper and safer to just buy a heavy barrel already fluted? Lastly, Can a heavy barrel even be put on a Rem 700 SPS?

Just wondering. I am more and more dissapointed in my SPS .243 every day. I want to get rid of it, but I am going to lose my butt on it and my wife isn't going to be happy about this. She is already upset about me spending so much money already.

If I fix the accuracy problem, bed it, float the barrel, will it be worth it? Maybe just a stock is the remody?

I have an 308 sps that shoots under 1moa with sierra 165btsp. It will barely shoot 2moa with sierra 150btsp. My point is be sure you have tried several different loads / bullets before giveing up. I have a couple other rifles that will shoot one load into 1/2 the average of the others or one load that shoots 2X the average. Yes, the skelaton stock is an embaressment. I think a hough or hs stock could be a great upgrade to any factory synthetic rifle. I also have an adl 243. it also shoots 1moa or less, but has the hevier blind mag adl stock. It picks up copper like a recycleing truck, but shoots well after the first two shots. They hit 1moa high.

Troponin, what loads are you shooting and at what distances? What kind of rest are you using? What kind of groups are you getting with other guns? I once got a new adl 243 with big chunk out of the crown. It was probably a fluke, but would only take a second to check if you havent already.

good luck

Fluting a barrel is not going to improve accuracy. It might well hurt it as it releases stresses in that hammer forged barrel. I have one fluted barrel, ex factory with shallow flutes for appearance, and wish it didn't.

I don't know what an SPS is, but a Remington 700 action will take a heavy enough barrel to satisfy about any application. What I don't know is how big the barrel channel is in the stock or how much wood or plastic there is to allow it to be cut out as needed.

Ammo Junky,

Shooting 80g Rem PSP. I tried putting some Premium Federal Vital shoks through it and it shot worst. Shooting rest is a steady point weighted sled rest. Very stable.

I am going to be starting a shooting log. EVERYTHING is going to be taken into account, starting with rifle stats. I am also going to be testing the temp of the barrel with each shot.

I think I'll clean it well, foul it with a round and then put 40-60 rounds through it, then clean it again, and repeat with another type of ammo. There are three rounds I am looking at, so I'll just pick the best of those 3.

If I float and bed it, will it throw off those results?

Ive just seen that Remington have started putting out SPS Heavy Barrel, not sure if they are chambered for .243 but pretty sure theyre in .204, .223.
Could be worth a look?
