smokeless muzzleloader??

I saw an ad today for an in-line muzzleloader made by Savage. It was listed as for smokeless powder.pyrodex and black powder. Couldn't find it on their web site. Anyone know if this was just a mis-print or was it legit?

I would be interested in that too. I've wondered why you couldn't use smokeless data from something like a 50-70, with a powder that comes close to filling up the case, and put the same ingredients in a modern muzzleloader. The fact that it would be a compressed charge and general caution have always stopped me from trying it.

For whatever it's worth, Remington's muzzleloader is made from the same steel as are their regular cartridge rifles. All they did was modify it for a cap. I suspect Savage did the same as it simplifies supply, parts, stock, and servicing.

I'd think that one of the reasons why this has never really been done is that unless you have a completely enclosed breech, you've got the primer hanging out right in front of your face. Not too bad at black powder pressures, but at smokeless pressures that could be a real problem.

With an enclosed type breech, I don't think it would be as much of a concern.

Chances are he knows how to use it.

Why not just use a lot less smokeless?
