Smle Id?

All--

Help me out, please. I have an Indian (Ishapore?) .308 Enfield, but I don't have any idea what "Number" or "Mark" the thing is. Can you tell me?

Secondarily, I'm debating whether to leave it stock, sporterize it into a "Scout", or buy another Enfield in 303 and "Scouterize" (God help me if my English Prof ever saw me use a bastardized word like that...) the new one. Suggestions/recommendations?

Thanks!

What is the date of manufacture? on the ring that holds the butt in place? All the newer, 1963-1970, are No1 MkIII's chambered for .308. The nose cap is the giveaway...

The British "number/mark/star" system was not used by the Indians for their own rifles. Your rifle is either the Rifle 2A or 2A1, depending on the sight markings.

It is basically the same as the British No. 1 Mk III, but it is a newly made rifle, in a different caliber, and has its own nomenclature.

Ishapore SMLE in .308

The Ishapore .308s, while using the older No.1MkIII* action style are NOT, repeat NOT the same action as the No.1MkIII*! They use a different metallurgy and can take the .308 pressures.

Do NOT use a .303 No.1MkIII* for .308.

The 2A's are good deals.

There are some genuine No.4 actions in .308, but if original British manufacture, they will have distinctive proofing on the bolt head and chamber.
