I've noticed in some posts that people are reluctant to post S&W or the full name of the manufacturer and are using $&? instead or "that company that starts with an S" and things like that. Is there some current litigation that has people scared of using that company's name in discussions?

I've noticed in some posts that people are reluctant to post S&W or the full name of the manufacturer and are using $&? instead or "that company that starts with an S" and things like that. It's a left-over from the days when the then British owners of S&W made "The Deal" with the Clinton administration.
I've forgotten the actual terms, but basically, S&W sold out the Second Amendment to the anti-gun Clinton Justice Department.
People were boycotting S&W, and some even refused to actually spell out their name.
So, they wrote it something like you listed.
S&W was sold back to an American company, and "The Deal" was simply dropped and more or less forgotten.
