Smitn & Wesson Lemon Squeezer question

My father recently passed away and we found a pearl handled Smith & Wesson 38 Safety, 3.5" revolver in his safe. It is still in the original Smith & Wesson box. Internet searches I have done suggest it is a Smith & Wesson 38 Safety Hammerless, AKA "Lemon Squeezer". The serial number is 116xxx. I am hoping to find out how old this revolver might be. Any suggestions on how I might find this out, other than paying $50 to Smith & Wesson for an authenticity search?
Thanks

The Jinks letter establishes early provenance -- when it left the factory and who it was shipped to.

Go to Amazon.com and spend $28.37 on the Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson. ~$20 for a used copy. Or, wait around long enough and someone with a copy will answer for you.

You looking to sell this thing?

To provide even an educated guess at value, we would need good, clear closeup pictures. In new condition, those guns bring $600 or more, but there were so many made that in lesser shape the value goes down rapidly.

Another option is go to the Smith & Wesson forum ask you questions and post clear pictures, you'll get a great deal of information.

The original box, if it is complete and in good condition, can add quite a bit of value to one of these older guns.

I've seen similar revolvers in new condition in new condition boxes for over $1,000.
