I've previously posted about my past problems with my Taurus products. To show that I am an equal opportunity whiner, let me tell you about my latest S&W problem. I ordered a Model 638 from my dealer. When it came in last week I went to get it. On inspection I found the front sight leaned to the right (and me a Democrat!) It appeared the barrel was out of alignment ever so slightly. The shop is ordering another 638 for me. Hopefully it will be in better shape.

So it's not just Taurus that I have problems with. I sometimes think that as soon as the gun finds out that I am the buyer, it does something to screw itself up! I am a magnet for defective firearms. The rest of you can take comfort in knowing that if there is a screwed up gun out there it will come to me, not you. You may thank me later.

That was, ironically, about the only thing the old pinned barrel was good for; line the little hole up to put the pin in, and odds are good that everything's in alignment...

I didn't see my first misaligned J-frame bbl until early 1999. My faith was shaken. :(

Say, dsgrntldPW, I noticed you live in the same strip mall as myself (the Valley), and was wondering where you buy your S&W firearms? I have been thinking about a shrouded hammer snub revolver: either Taurus or S&W, but the S&W price seems steep. The cheapest Taurus shrouded hammer .38 comparable is the Total Titanium at $425, and that's still a lot cheaper than the S&W. Do you have a place that sells S&W for reasonable prices?

S&W's

Roscoe,

I was at Legendary Guns just North of Camelback (I think on 7th Ave, but I don't recall exactly) visiting my parents a few weeks back. They seemed to have decent prices and the guys behind the counter were friendly even after they learned I was from California. :D

Frighteningly, I'm seeing between 5 and 10 PERCENT of all new S&W revolvers at gunshows that either have improperly torqued barrels, unaligned barrels or both.

The barrel pin also meant that you didn't have to torque the living hell out of the barrel to make it stay tight. Which means the liklihood of a stressed frame or stretched barrel shank was virtually non-existent.

ON THE OTHER HAND......Within the last 14 months I have puchased six new S&W revolvers and ALL of them have been perfect. Maybe I'm just lucky, but I have NO complaints. The same holds true for the two new S&W semi's that I bought during the same time frame. All are first-class handguns and I fire them all regularily. The older Smiths that I own all function flawlessly
as do my Berettas and Colts.

I would have thought that they assembled the barrel to the frame, drilled the hole through both, and then insert the pin. Therefore, there wouldn't be any lining the holes up routine and the barrel would have to be checked for proper alignment prior to drilling/pinning. I believe that's SOP for any dowelled or pinned application.

I may, of course, be wrong.

roscoe- I buy from Lone Wolf, Randalls or Scotsdale Gun Center. The 638 was to be about $400, a decent price I thought. Legendary (19th Ave north of Camelback) has by far the best selection on the west side, but their prices seem a bit high. They do seem to have good prices on used guns though.

I am the southeast rep for lemon guns. I take the heat down here for everyone. I am on first name basis with the UPS counter lady. Lemonguns, Lemonknives and Lemoncameras.
