Thinking about the PC 629 Light Hunter but also could choose a 629 PowerPort 6.5" and save about $225.This will be a deer gun.Is the PC worth the extra? That 225 could buy a nice red dot.thanks.

In the past a PC gun was something you noticed the moment you worked the action. Trigger pulls were silky smooth with a crisp letoff. Today, IMO, you get nothing but a dressed up production model in a pretty case. You can send the brand new PC gun back to the factory and they will hand tune it for you, but for the price you pay for these handguns that's just foolish. The reason you buy a PC guns is for the "Performance" and many owners say their PC models have great actions, but none I have handled have impressed me right out the box. So unless the PC model has something added on that you prefer I would buy a standard production model, send it back to the factory and have the PC shop hand tune it and come out dollars ahead with a model that will perform with the best of them. You just won't have that pretty case to announce to the world of how much you spent on your handgun.

I agree. I figured I was going to have to send my 686 in to the PC to make it shoot as nice as my older m19... I haven't bothered. My 686 shoots every bit as nice, trigger feels 99 percent as nice and over all I couldn't be happier.

Save the money for ammo cost

I heard that PC revolvers are only "designed" by the PC and not actually worked over by them like the PC autos. Apparently they are built in the standard shop, not the PC shop. Or so I was told.

The extra bump in price is almost always made in in resale value. I've got 2 revolvers and 2 semis from the Performance Center and I think they are worth every extra cent, not to mention the wonderfully smooth trigger actions.

However... the other extras like special barrel configurations, finishes, sights, case, ect, may be of little value to you for your deer hunting application. I'd probably advise you to spend the "bump" in price on a Weigand mount, UltraDot scope, and a few boxes of ammo. Kinda like this setup:

Good Luck...

To me, Performance Center guns are so darned ugly, I wouldn't buy one anyway. I'd just buy the standard model, send it in (or to a gunsmith) if you want a buttery-smooth trigger.

You can buy a presentation case from S&W if you want one.

The PC wheelgun is becoming more and more a variant that you cannot have in the regular production line than a specially fitted revolver. So, while you can always buy a regular S&W, you can only get a 627 in the PC line. The 625 pictured above is a very sweet gun!

The PC autos however are just heavenly (and expensive).
