Some references say that the S&W Model 520 was made for the New York State Police. Shouyd there be any NYSP markings? How many were manufactured?

Hardball, most of my references are packed now in preperation of my move into the new hosue in a few but I think they are marked and know that there were very few made. The 520 was an oddity for Smith N frames and very desireable.
Might you be thinking of one that just came up for sale in a recent edition of a national publication.;) I just saw one but do not have t he cash for it right now.:(

No, Gunslinger. There is one available in a local gunshop. It is about 99% and in the original blue and silver box. I don't need it, but I love Smith & Wesson N frames so it may be an early Christmas present. Thanks for the information. Hope you have an esy move,

Hard Ball,

The 520 was originally ordered by the New York State Police around 1980. The order was never completed, and non were ever delivered, so I don't think there are any that are NYSP marked, which would indicate that the NYSP had taken possession of the gun.

This was the only S&W N-frame .357 ever made without adjustable sights.

According to Jinks & Nahaus, there were approximately 3,000 made, so it is not particularly collectible -- more so because the box is there, and the condition.

If all the original paperwork and any tools are there, it would probably be priced right around $500 or a bit more in Virginia.

How much is the dealer asking?

He is asking $400, but I may be able to talk him down a little.

Well. it turned out when I went back that the dealer had two of them in idetical condition. Their serial numbers werevery close together but not consecutive. He finally agreed to sell them both for $ 700. Since I love S&W Nframes I bought them both. I guess I may have to change my user name to 'Two Gun Hard Ball."

I looked up the Model 520 kn Jim Supica's Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson at the local library. Supica says "DEveloped for the New York Stae Police but never delivered. 3,000 manufactured in 1980. Estimayed value New in box in 1996 $400. Supica's book is excellent so I have ordered a copy.
