I'm thinking this will be my next pistol purchase and wanted to see what everyone thinks about them. I have not shot one but a friend of mine has the springfield XD in 40 S&W which is nice but I'm not sure if that's the one for me. This will be for concealed carry, and blasting steel targets as well.

While I do not have the shield, I have the compact which I purchased when it was still a newer product. I just had to try 40 cal. Unless you are dead set on 40 cal I look back and I would have gone with 9mm too. Ammo is cheaper (so are the projectiles for reloading) and hollow point expansion is great these days.
I find that with the m&p 40c you have noticeably more muzzle flip than in the 9mm with my conversion barrel. It doesn't hurt but it slows follow up shots/sight acquisition down a little bit. Still working on mastery of this. With an even thinner and lighter pistol id imagine it to be a factor to consider.

I traded my shield 9 for a 40. It's been a great gun but get ready for some recoil! When I shoot 165 gr American eagle stuff it gets jumpy. I put talon grips on mine and it stopped the jumping (which in turn helped with the recoil).

I'll be keeping my shield.

I have the full size 40 cal and I wouldn't trade it for anything this one is what I carry. I also installed the apex trigger system on it....it really improved the action as well as getting rid of the safety break trigger (which in my opinion was the worst thing ever made) after a little work the trigger pull is a little less than 2 lbs.....and just in case you guys want to know I used to work at storm lake barrels and they make a 9MM conversion barrel and it's a drop in... the magazine for the 40 will also feed the 9's and it's an awesome barrel and has a warranty.

I use a Shield 40 in my EDC rotation

Great gun..... somehow it tames the 40 recoil just fine

I recommend an inner tube grip sleeve

My wife and I have bought several Shields, both in 40 and 9. The springs in these were specially designed to tame the kick, and it really helps in the 40, which is a feistier round in the first place. Either one is a great gun. Keep in mind you'll get one less round in the mag with the 40...
