A friend asked me to find some information on a revolver he has.
When you open the cylinder it has the following stamped on the frame.
M
54425
7
I am not sure if the two fours are triangles or fours.

The bottom butt end of frame is stamped K 179651

Right side of barrel is stamped 38 S & W Special ctg

Right side of frame under the cylinder is stamped
Made in USA
Marcas Registradas
Smith & Wesson
Springfield Mass.

Right side in front of grip has a trade mark circle with "trade" over the top
and "Mark" under the circle and "Reg US pat off under that.

Left side of barrel has "Smith & Wesson" stamped on it

The front edge of cylinder has "K 179651" stamped on it.

Can anyone give me information as to what year it was made the model ect.

K 179651 would place your K38 circa 1953.
Hopefully it still has the original grips. there should be the same number inside of one of them. They should have a diamond in the center. Your gun should be a pinned barrel 5 screw model. The number inside the yoke is an assembly number. These are very good shooting guns, and I feel fortunate to own one that is a shooter.

Here's mine.

Your revolver would either be a Masterpiece (or Pre-14) with a 6" barrel or a Combat Masterpiece (or Pre-15) with the 4" barrel.

I have one with the same markings some gun shop was selling it as a Model 7 no such animal.I found that it's a Pre model 14 and is a great shooting gun :p I got mine for about $200 what length barrel mine is 6" :)
