Smith Wesson Finish

I just bought a SW M629 Mountain Gun. I don't know anything about metal. My concern is the frame area around the cylinder is either unfinished or a different metal. Should I be concerned...?

Many thanks

Back in 1935 when the 357 Mag was introduced ,that revolver had a fantastic fine polish and super bluing job. But a job like that requires a very skilled and experienced worker. They are hard to come by today. Thirty years ago if you compared the M27 and M28 they were exactly the same guns except for the finish. The high polish M27 cost 1/3 more than the matte finished M28 !!... Normally the frame inside the cylinder does not show and therefore is not finished like the outside .Don't be concerned ! Enjoy your mountain gun.

Actually, that is a sign of how far S&W has fallen. I have M10 duty weapons that look better by far than that. My M28-2 looks better than that. S&W is pulling one here. I would contact S&W and demand that they repolish and refinish that poor example of robotic GIGO. On their dime including S/H. Consider what else is hidden from view in the action. That is a poor QC problem.

I have many stainless Smith's, they all look that way. I have some blued ones made in the 1950's and the inside of the frame is blued but not polished either.

I have quite a few Pre-numbered Smiths and they all exhibit machining marks in that area meaning very little polishing. My stainless models looks the same as yours. So that is not a sign of quality falling. I can't think of any manufactor who would polish an area not seen all the time.

I have 5 other SW's and there is a finish in the area that houses the cylinders. Maybe I need a better pic, but this gun goes from SS to a lead grey finish...Go figure!!!
