Smith & Wesson 916A problem

I have a S&W 916A that has a spent hull in the chamber. I had chambered a round and was going to eject it but as I closed the chamber the rounds remaining in the tube came out the loading port in the bottom of the reciever. I pressed the release and tried to eject the round in the chamber but it would not release. I fired the round and tried to eject the hull and it still would not release. That is where I am with this at the moment, can anyone out there shed any light on this problem for me? Have any of you run into this before, and if so what was the solution?
Thanks

I distinctly recall two department S&W pumpguns in 1978 that were actually being carried on duty demonstrate a couple minor glitches.
On one, the fore-end slid off when an officer tried to cycle it. On the other, the trigger could not be pulled unless the buttstock was knocked on the floor with the muzzle straight up first. Both would have been a trifle inconvenient if suddenly needed in a social situation. The old S&W shotguns were not highly regarded in my part of the country.
I don't mean to sound snide or unsympathetic, but the solution to both of those was to get rid of them, preferably in a way that wouldn't get a new possessor hurt.
The only S&W shotgun I ever had any respect for was their short-lived Model 3000.
Are you emotionally attached to your 916?

It sounds like a shell latch failed and allowed the rounds in the tube to be pushed back into the action.

Likely there's either a shell or the broken latch jamming the action.

About the only help I can be, is to recommend disassembling the gun to clear the obstruction, or take it to a gunsmith that can.

The S&W 916 shotgun was a major failure for S&W, and so damaged their reputation that they briefly considered buying them back from the owners.

They do have a dismal reputation for durability and reliability.

New parts and an exploded view of the gun can be found at Gun Parts Corporation:

As I recall, they weren't made by S&W, done by an outfit that started with an "A" (?) and sold by S&W with the S&W brand on them.
Unless you're really attached to the thing, it's not worth putting any money into it.
