Smith & Wesson 686 one of the Best Revolvers

I have been shooting my 686 for 4 years. It is fantastic to shoot with either 38's or 357 ammo. Extremely accurate and fun. My wife purchased it for me for my 60th Birthday. Great Revolver from Smith and Wesson. I have the 4" model. What do you all think about Revolvers? I also have the Smith & Wesson 642, Glock 19, Sig p232, Beretta 92 FS Inox. I love target shooting.

Model 686

I like my model 686 with the 4 inch barrel so much I bought the 686+ with the 3 inch barrel - love them both

I do like my 686-1 with a 4" barrel. It is only surpassed by my S&W Model 25 Mountain .45 Colt also with a 4" barrel. The model 25 is the blued version and the model 625 is the stainless steel version. Unlike the model 686, the other two come in other calibers.

In my opinion the .45 Colt is the way to go with all the versatility of the .45 Colt round. :)
 
I personally would go with the 357 or the 45ACP just in case you need to use factory ammo, not much out there for the 45Colt unless you hand load. The 686 may be the best revolver(by design) S&W has ever produced. Too bad they didn't produce it prior to the 70s when they were making really nice guns.
 
Yes, I like the 686 as well..../ I have one in a 4" and a 6"....both dash 1's...

but I have to admit, I like my model 27-2 Nickel, in a 4" better ( N Frame)...

but they're both nice guns.

Only the S&W681 is better.
But I like fixed sights, and yes you have a fine revolver. You will enjoy this revolver for many years!

Love my 686

When I graduated high school, my mother bought me a st of luggage. My dad took me to the LGS and said pick out a handgun. I was shocked. I picked up a 3 inch 686 and fell in love. I still have it 20 years later and it is still my favorite. It is still the best dbl/sngl action revolver I own.

I carried it as an off-duty gun for years cuz I jus shot it so well. Guys thought I was crazy for carrying such a large piece. I still shoot it regularly.
 
I have a 6" 686-2 still NIB. Bought it way back when one could be had for about $369.00.

It's now worth $900.00 or so to the right buyer. My shooters are a 2.5" and a 4" model 66.

Also have a 6" 629 NIB, as well as a 3" 629 w/un-fluted cylinder, still NIB. I bought them when the prices were right as well.

Damn guns earn way more interest than my savings account does. :o
 
I just brought a new 7 shot M686 PC with a 2.5 in barrel. "Bloodwork Light"!
Its in very nice shape. The BC gap is .006 in and everything is straight and the finish is flawless.
I looked at the M627 PC with a 2.625 in barrel. Very nice gun, but a little big for CCW. Its Dirty Harry's gun with 4.5 in chopped off the barrel, at least size wise. Weight was actually OK for holster carry, but its physically large. The 8 shot cylinder is probably the biggest deterrent for concealed carry.
Both guns had the same $999. tag.
I traded in my fairly new M686 SSR. It was a very nice gun, maybe smother than the PC, but I have found out, once again, that I am a snub guy. I just like shooting the short barrels. In the same vein, I will be buying an Ahrends finger grove Cocobolo butt grip. I like the grips to match the barrel.
I will order it unfinished. That way, I can re- contour the grips slightly, to suit, and finish with Tung Oil, which I prefer to varnish.

My 6" 686 PowerPort model is my all-time favorite gun! I've owned and shot lots and lots of guns over the years and I still come back to it.
