Hello folks, I apologize if this has been covered before, I tried a search to no avail. I came across a brand new S&W 645 w/5 inch barrel and the gent is asking $595.00. Is that a fair price? Can I shoot lead reloads through it? Thanks

Um, this is the revolver forum. Price seems kinda warm for a 645 (check KY Imports for good prices). Don't see why lead reloads won't work.

When I am looking for gun pricing I frequently go to AuctionArms and search for both open and closed auctions on the firearm of interest. You can get an idea of what people are asking and how they are selling.
I got the 1989 version, used in the box, very good condition for well under the "new" price.

If it is truly new, never been sold to a retail customer, and is in perfect condition.......price a little high.

If it is in "like new in box" condition......price is about $125 high.

Ursus, what I meant was that the S&W 645 is a semiauto pistol with a 5" bbl that was introduced in - I think - 1985. That's why I didn't think it would be proper to check in the revo forum.

Or, do you mean the 625?

My apologies Erich. I am not familiar w/S&W nomenclature as it pertains to their handguns. Yes I meant the 45ACP revolver not the semi auto.

Gotcha - seems like a decent price from what I see on GunsAmerica ($529 to $569 in that condition with that barrel length - the 4" tubes bring a little more dinero, probably from the IDPA crowd). You can certainly shoot lead reloads through it.

It's presently cataloged - you might want to see if a S&W dealer can get it for you for less . . . .

Moon clips in a revo are a sweet and speedy reload!

Now you have peaked my interest as far as the IDPA is concerned. I have competed in pin matches w/my govt 45. Why would the shorter barrel be more desireable?

As of October, the 5 inch barreled guns wont be allowed any longer. You'll have to use 4 inch or less.Makes no sense to me.I carry my 5 inch 625 all the time.

I guess every "rule" has a basis or a reason. I for one would be interested in why a 5" revolver will no longer be legal for IDPA?
I would doubt they are stopping the use of 5" 1911's.

Oh, not 645. A revolver. Ignore my last post.

JWC.....Maby because they figure 1911 style is a carry gun and a revolver with more than 4" barrel is not. Strange indeed.

My 5" 27 is a duty gun for cryin out loud.

The 5" N-frames are some of the best balanced guns (for me) out there.

Let's face it - rules for gun games tend to be somewhat arbitrary. Personally, I'd rather have the 5" tube on the 625.

Ursus, this has turned into a pretty fun thread !

That is why I don't like gun games...too many rules.

In real life shootings, there are no rules. That is why I question how much gun games prepare you for combat.

But to each his own.

(If I can effectively conceal a Desert Eagle 6" .50 AE with a good belt holster and my natural large build, why should I not be allowed to use it in IDPA? Is it the logical choice...no...would it be my first choice...no...but what is it gonna hurt other than my wallet?)

C.R.Sam, You are probably right. I played around with the IDPA, was fun. But that was it. I was not interested enough to continue. Mostly shot my 1911, once used the S&W M-19.
It was my intention to use the 625, but I never did.
