Smith & Wesson 638 - Price check...

I need the actual dealer cost from his wholesaler for a Smith & Wesson 638 Bodyguard revolver. Just trying to figure out a fair price before I buy.

Cost

I do not know dealer cost but I put one on layaway yesterday and it ran 369.00 plus tax. The store I bought it from has the best prices around town.

Don't recall teh exact # but i do remember that (when looking at my dealers supplyer catalog.) the 638 was about $50 more (his cost) than the 642. Gunbroker has them all the time for $340 + S/H. I'd say anything under $425 OTD and your doing OK.

p.s. Nice choice!

I actually sent an e-mail to a local dealer for a price check. In his return e-mail, he said the price for a new one would be $349 plus tax for either a model 638 or 642. I had asked about the 642 also as a comparison. Does that look like a good price then? Which model is the better deal?

Looks live a very good price on both to me. I Have a mod 38 and 642. ( Both are my carry guns.) Hopeing to get a 638 soon. ( I'd have one already if I could get that price.) . I preffer the 638 design over the 642 myself. I like the option for SA shooting ( for targets, plinking etc. Not combat) . Some will argue differently.

I think that the reason I am leaning toward the 638 over the 642 is the fact that you can shoot it single action also. Looks wise, the 642 is the "prettier" of the two, but I like the single / double action of the 638 more. I assume that they must cost my dealer the same since he quoted me the same price.

Well, I picked up my S&W model 638 on Saturday. It was $349 plus 7% tax exactly like my dealer had said. I guess I did okay with the deal. Just didn't get a chance to go out and shoot it this weekend. Maybe next weekend.

My dealer cost for a 638 bodygaurd with a 1 7/8 barrel is $315. I'm not sure if that's taboo to actually say that out loud or not though ... :D

Now if only I had an FFL I could have all kinds of cool stuff.

That was the reason that I went ahead and purchased my pistol. I had done a little research in some dealer catalogs of mine (eventhough I am not a dealer) and found out that the dealer cost was in the $310 to $320 range, so I didn't guilty about letting him make a small, fair profit on me.

IMHO a 10-15% profit is more than fair and that would put said gun at around $340-$350 range. Even $360 wouldn't be bad. Over that ... maybe shop around a bit.

Mastrogiacomo,

Here in the PRK, I've seen Model 648's selling anywhere from the high $400's (ie $489) to high $500's ($575). This is a side effect of living where you and I do. Taxachussets and Kalifornia have reduced the gun inventories via anti-gun laws which means there's a higher demand for what's available.
