I was wondering if a S&W 629 can be converted over to fire .357 magnum instead of the .44 Magnum? It seems to me that using parts from the N-frame 627, this could be done, but I am not sure.

Thanks,

Ought to be mechanically possible.
Be sure that the "dash numbers" of the base gun and the replacement barrel and cylinder are compatible. Allow for the gunsmith to still have to set timing, cylinder gap, headspace, and shake.
It won't be cheap.
I bet you could buy a pretty nice blue .357 or a good down payment on a 627 for the price of the conversion, and have both.
Or trade guns for little or no difference, depending on how anxious you seemed.

Price a new 627 cylinder and barrel and, after your heart re-starts, go shopping for used 627's again. ;)

As noted, the barrel and cylinder would need to be swapped. Cost would be prohibitive. If you want a .357 instead of a .44 sell your gun and buy a .357. It will be quicker, easier and cheaper in the long run.

As suspected, there are going to be some "incidentals" involved other than "just" fitting barrel and cylinder.

Don't have stainless but measured a 27 and a 29

Significant differences in dimensions in the following parts.

Cylinder length, cylinder diameter. Star diameter, Frame window height and length.

Stainless pair should show similar differences.

Soooo....very labor intensive. Getting headspace right, modifying and fitting hand and cylinder stop. And lord knows what else.

Interestipating. Till now, I thought the frames were alike.
