I just picked up a S&W model 36 . 1 7/8 barrel ,round butt with diamond grips. wood and blue is 99% and appears unfired. I called S&W to check the date of mfg , and they said 1957. I did plan on using this for my summer carry weapon , but if it is rare i do not want to. what is its value .thanks for the help

This gun was in production for a loooooooong time. It was a bread and butter backup gun and production was probably large. Unless you have the original box, all the paperwork, and/or it was owned by some police agency, I don't think it would be worth much more than about $350 or so. Check over a www.smith-wessonforum.com and see what they say. Lots of S&W revolver nuts hang out there. You have a nice, solid shooter. Just don't run +Ps through it and wipe it down frequently (I would do this after each day of carry).

Use a very good lined holster, wipe down the gun most every night and vacuum the holster to keep the dirt and gunk from building up inside and you will have a nice shooter/carry gun for a long time.

OBTW only shoot 38 spec non +p loads. It will probably like something in the 158 gr level.

Not necessarily rare, but a very good example of an early 36. I wouldn't tote it, but I have other J-frames to tote. The advice Brian Williams gave you is sound; follow it and you'll have a beautiful gun to treasure for a long time.

I found one a while back that was made around the same time as yours. Grind the grooves off the trigger,do an action job,put on a set of boot grips (i used Hogue) and enjoy.
